Although I m stuck in the 19th century, I try to keep up with the times. The only problem is, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Gogol, Chekhov and friends set the bar so high that the new guys don t seem to be able to get over it. Well, Vasily Grossman may have, but there is not much of his writing available. How about Solzhenitsyn? Is he over-rated as a... more »

  • The Turkish Gambit
    • Rated 4 stars

What a fun read! Praise on the dust-jacket is dead-on correct: the story is Holmesian, and the "novel ... does Christie, Collins and Conan Doyle proud." The Turkish Gambit is a roman à clef set during the Russo-Turkish War, 1877-1878. The great young detective, Erast Petrovich Fandorin, does his work among thinly disguised figures from the battle of Plevna. This is a very fast read: sparse descriptions, little character development. Very plot-driven, but so well done! I enjoyed this first brush with Akunin so muc h that I am changing my reading plans in order to catch the other three Akunin novels available in English before moving on. Highly recommended!

Bromfield's translation is excellent, and does not get in the way of a great story.

John Boyd had a phenomenal impact on modern American military strategy. His ideas accounted for many of the original successes of coalition forces in both Iraq wars. He was a maverick fighter pilot who went on to be revered not by his own service branch but by the Marine Corps. This is a very intriguing, well-written biography of a fascinating American. Highly recommended.

  • Ring Around the Bases: The Complete Baseball Stories of Ring Lardner

This is uniquely American humor, conveyed in the form of letters written by a so-so professional pitcher who thinks way too highly of himself. The colloquial language is rendered beautifully. If you like the television comedy, "The Office," you might like this, because its gentle humor reflects the same kind of misunderstanding of just about everything important.

I loved this book. It was impossible NOT to care about the protagonist, Christopher, a young boy with Asperger's Syndrome. The detective story was well told, from his unusual perspective. Great.

  • The Daily Six: Simple Steps to Prosperity and Purpose
    • Rated 2 stars

The author, a former big shot, crashed and burned when the bank didn't like his debt/equity ratio and took his assets. Although he had been a mentor in prisons, he didn't learn balance until he met John Gray (the physicist) and learned the value of quiet time. His new company is life coaching with the Daily Six: 1. Willingness, 2. Daily Quiet Time, 3. Love and Forgiveness, 4. Service to Others, 5. Gratitude, 6. Action. Not bad, but not original. Lots of good quotes.

Young Tony was in jail when he met his mentor, Malcolm, who took an interest in his life and helped him turn it around through reading and running. Simple story, but well written and motivating. Teaches importance of mentoring and being mentored. Recommended.
