I honestly don't presume to be an authority on books. However, I can say I know crap when I read one.

"People talk of beauty, and having no feeling for words, they use that one carelessly, so that it loses its force; and the thing it stands for, sharing its name with a hundred trivial objects, is deprived of dignity. They call beautiful... more »

Now that you've read Razor's Edge, which to me was easily the most beautiful novel after I put it down, what can you say?

How did you find Wilder? I didn't at all like Bridges of San Luis Rey, and I doubted if his plays are any better. I find his style too cerebral and lacking in thrill. I don't know.

I liked Williams the best because he's just so subtle. You don't realize right away what the relationships between his characters are, and when it dawns on you, everything's almost so shocking. At times I think his ideas are too simple, but because they're too simple, and nobody tries to be that simple, he tends to stand out. It's like something that you could have thought of but didn't because you felt it wouldn't amount to anything. But his delivery is perfect, which makes him quite a genius, which makes his simplicity brilliant. And when it comes to portraying human suffering, he's number one.

Forget The Beautiful and Damned (it's breezy and easy to read anyway), read I, Claudius by Robert Graves first. Please!

isn't it kinda shitty that i haven't read cat on a hot tin roof when i've read all of williams' major dramas? i couldn't find a copy ANYWHERE in the philippines; none of the university libraries store them. i did see one once at a bargain bookstore but it was damn expensive (it's a collection and all of its companion pieces have been consumed by moi already) and hardbound and all that jazz. send me your copy, okay? i don't want to see the film before i get my claws on the book.

Oh, you've read Gatsby? That also went straight to my favorites' list. Isn't he just absolutely brilliant? he made a completely uninteresting setting worth the while. Rio doesn't quite agree when I tell her that Fitzgerald has The Art.

So what can you say about The Night of the Iguana? Isn't it brilliant? I love the old man's poem, can't quite get the last line off my head:

"O courage, would you not as well select a second place to dwell, not only in that golden tree but in the frightened heart of me?"

I still think that Williams was the wittiest playwright of his age.

Hello, I don't know you, but I'd just like to say that I agree with your thoughts about Wuthering Heights, stated in the passage you've written up the top.
