  • The Trials of the Honorable F. Darcy
    • Rated 5 stars

Gone are the days of petticoats and carriages. In the century of the business suit and BMW, romance is a whole different story…or is it? Sara Angelini gives us a hilarious retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, but from a modern stand in THE TRIALS OF THE HONORABLE F. DARCY.

When I received this book, I thought it would be cute and I was sure it would be a good read. Something to keep me entertained on a rainy day. What I didn’t expect was how often I would laugh or how much I would really get into the story. I know the Pride and Prejudice story – it’s nothing new. Ms. Angelini, however, managed to make it a new and refreshing tale that really captured my attention.

The best way for me to describe THE TRIALS OF THE HONORABLE F. DARCY is a mix between Legally Blonde and of course, Pride and Prejudice. Lizzie was adorable and I immediately fell in love with her. Ms. Angelini also managed to make the modern Darcy just as annoying as the original and just as attractive at the same time. Even though it’s a well known story, I still had that feeling of anxiety as I read on to find out what would happen next in their struggling relationship.

If I had to pick one thing that made THE TRIALS OF THE HONORABLE F. DARCY a winner, it would be Ms. Angelini’s writing style. Some books have great stories, but if the pages are difficult to read, that story doesn’t really come through to the reader. This book was quite easy to read and had such a liquid flow that it felt like the story played out in front of you more than just say there waiting to be read. The sign of a great book, to me, is when you end up reading half the book in one sitting and don’t even realize it. Reading page after page with no sense for the passage of time in real life means the reader is completely engrossed in the book. That’s what happened to me here. I read this in three sittings only because I decided it would be a good idea to break for eating and sleeping. Otherwise, I could easily see someone curling up with this, a fuzzy blanket, and a mug of hot chocolate, ready to waste the day in a bubble of literary pleasure.

Some people don’t like classic retellings – I know that. Some feel that the story, even if told in a different way, will never live up to the original. Whether this lives up to the classic or not, I have to say that it was a great book and Ms. Angelini put enough of herself into it to make it a wonderful read despite a reader’s prior feelings on Pride and Prejudice.

In all, I highly recommend this. This was one of my favorites for 2009 and Ms. Angelini is an author I’m definitely going to have to keep my eye out for.

    Awesome Lavratt

    by Ann Wilkes
    • Rated 4 stars

When Ann Wilkes approached me to review AWESOME LAVRATT, I was told that if I liked the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy books by Douglas Adams, I would like AWESOME LAVRATT. I agreed, believing that there would be some entertainment value in the book but thinking that there was no way that it could compare to the hilarious story of Arthur Dent and towel-loving Ford. I am happy to say that I was mistaken. AWESOME LAVRATT was quite the entertaining read with a riveting story and realistic characters.

Horace Whistlestop runs a spatial junkyard. He seems to do fairly well until the day that three ships arrive, all after the same junker vessel. Of course, as the story goes for most men, a beautiful woman appears, creating mass chaos and destruction for Horace. Enter Aranna Navna. After the Awesome Lavratt, a mind control device uncovered on a planet and hidden on the junker vessel, Aranna will do just about anything to get her hands on it. When she does, a whirlwind series of events occurs, drawing the mysterious black box back to its home.

AWESOME LAVRATT was a short read at only 104 pages, but it was worth every second. It was funny, lighthearted and thoroughly entertaining. Wilkes has a great way with creating depth to her characters and adding realism to the story. For a story set in outer space with mind control devices, this is quite extraordinary.

I would love to tell you more about the other characters in AWESOME LAVRATT but I'm unsure how to do it without giving too much of the story away. You'll just have to trust me when I say that Wilkes creates fantastic characters and each one really brings a special element to the story.

Fantastic characters, colorful writing and a fun atmosphere are what make this book superb. Add on a fantastic ending that will leave you dumbstruck and we've got a winner on our hands. The only thing that caught me up a little was the change in time. Not every event was explained in great detail. Perhaps I'm just used to longer stories that have the room to explain every movement and every facial twitch. AWESOME LAVRATT, being the shorter book that it is, didn't have the room to do that. I pondered this for a while and finally came to the decision Wilkes did a good thing by swiftly taking us through parts of the story that wouldn't really make impact the general course of events too much. Overall this worked great.

AWESOME LAVRATT was a fantastic book and I highly recommend that anyone looking for an entertaining and fun read should pick it up. Fans of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy will enjoy it immensely I think. It should be no surprise that as I finish writing this I have AWESOME LAVRATT sitting next to me, waiting for me to come read it again. This is definitely one of those books that one could read over and over with the humor only getting funnier each time.

  • Night Pleasures
    • Rated 4 stars

Sherrilyn Kenyon has a knack for creating beautiful love stories with just the right touch of steamy passion. NIGHT PLEASURES, the third Dark-Hunter story, is no different. I found myself drawn to this book and over and over again regardless of the fact that I had other books begging for reviews. I tried, honestly I really did, but discovered that I just couldn’t leave this story until I had finished it. Kenyon develops so much tension in her world of the Dark-Hunters that to turn your back on the story is like carrying a taught rubber band around with you just waiting for it to snap.

NIGHT PLEASURES tells the tale of Amanda Devereaux, a woman with hidden talents, a crazy family and an uptight ex-fiancé. Bound and determined to make a normal life for herself away from her Voodoo family, she encourages her mind to ignore her instincts and fall in love with Cliff. During their engagement, she makes the one mistake that so many couples make in their relationships; at his insistence, she introduces Cliff to her crazy family. With a vampire hunting sister and fortune telling relatives, it really shouldn’t be a surprise that Cliff ran as fast as his snobbish legs could carry him and quickly broke off the engagement. Distraught by finding herself along yet again and angered that her family can’t seem to grow up and quit pretending, we find Amanda at the beginning of the book, bitter and lonely.

Enter Kyrian of Thrace. In FANTASY LOVER, Book One of the Dark-Hunter series, we are introduced to Kyrian’s character only briefly through Julian of Macedon’s tales. In his time, Kyrian was a fantastic warrior, holding back armies with practically nothing but his own sword, sharp tongue and brute strength. Alas, a perfect life can never last and when the unthinkable happens, Kyrian finds himself thrown into a world of danger and above all, darkness. As a Dark-Hunter, he finds strength in his continued existence as a warrior and lives year by year content with caring for himself. Well, that is until the night he awakes to find himself handcuffed to the prim and entirely disbelieving Amanda.

I found the tension between Kyrian and Amanda to really be the best aspect of NIGHT PLEASURES. There really is not a lot of free space where we as the reader are allowed to wind down. Kenyon keeps the tension growing and ebbing, pulling us along and creating depth to the story. Just when we think that Kyrian and Amanda might get over themselves and come to find peace in each other, another roadblock is thrown up and we find that they are separated again. I won’t tell you how the story ends, but rest assured your emotions will get quite the workout as you turn the pages.

In NIGHT PLEASURES, we do get to meet a few new characters, but as a series should, Kenyon only gives us enough information about each character and their background to make them a substantial part of the story, leaving the rest for us to discover through future books. I love how she introduces us to the Dark-Hunter world, giving us enough information to learn about this new, intriguing set of circumstances and yet leaving us begging for more.

Fair warning time: With a title like NIGHT PLEASURES, there is no doubting that this is an adult book. There are some graphic scenes but they all add something special to the story. Kenyon has a wonderful way of writing, expressing feeling and working with our senses. Her words are well placed and really help to bring the reader down into the action.

Overall, I found NIGHT PLEASURES to be a very enjoyable read. If it weren’t for the other books that require my attention I would already have my nose in the next installment of the series, NIGHT EMBRACE. I do highly recommend this book to anyone that likes their stories mixed with romance, action and the perfect touch of the paranormal.

  • Twenty Boy Summer
    • Rated 5 stars

    Absolutely, beyond a doubt beautiful!

I really loved this story. Sarah Ockler did an amazing job of illustrating what it means to live, to die and to survive. TWENTY BOY SUMMER had beautiful prose and an undercurrent of hope that we, as the readers, couldn’t help but feel. I felt that her descriptions were so lovely and so realistic that it was almost like she picked us up and tossed us on the sands of the beach at Zanzibar Bay. We can really feel the sun on our face, the sand beneath our toes, and most importantly, the raw emotion that fills the pages.

This was a wonderful story of hope and survival; one that really gives the emotions a workout. In my opinion, Ockler created a complete winner. A more detailed review will be located online on my blog after final edits.
