A great day is a stack of books, a pot of homemade soup simmering on the stove, a fire in the fireplace. No makeup. Comfy clothes. No cell phone. And of course, my husband and family.
A typical day. Wife, Mother of four young adult children and two grandchildren (not quite the empty nest). Adult only child daughter of two loving... more »

Anna Quindlen is no doubt a very gifted author as she has proven time and time again with her eloquent prose and interesting past protagonists. We are introduced to the main characters in this novel little by little. Mary Beth is the typical upper middle class suburban mother of three teenage children....never knowing if her parenting was the best but always invested in her family and never far from the hub of everyday activities. We watch the oldest daughter Ruby, a senior in high school, come into her own as she finds her unique style and as her interests matures leaving her long time boyfriend and neighbor Kiernan behind, much to his dismay. The twins, Alex and Max are fraternal, headed to high school and could not have personalities that are more different. Glen, an Ophthalmologist, clearly loves his wife and children even if he is a bit in the background. Quindlen develops these characters in a way that connects the reader to their psyche. I especially enjoyed getting to know Ruby. We know there is a tragedy coming.....what is it?.....when is it going to happen?...I found that somewhat distracting as the novel progressed and when the tragedy finally happens it is so unbelievable and horrific that is was difficult to finish the book. But finish it I did and I really don't know why. The book left me feeling empty and wondering what was the point? We all know that bad things happen to good people and tragedy can strike anyone, anywhere, anytime.....but honestly, (spoiler) after wiping out over half of the characters in the novel.....there was not a whole lot left to build upon.....I give five stars to the author's craft and zero stars for this particular sad tale.

As a person that does not generally like the romance genre, I found this delightful novel to be an exception . The author transports us to a small English village where the Major has lived most of his life. The unlikely romance between Major Pettigrew, the well-mannered if somewhat rigid long-time resident of the changing village and Mrs. Ali, the local Pakistani shopkeeper develops despite local prejudice. The author goes on to show us that it is never to late to fall in love and to realize that your way of looking at the world can always change for the better.

This book was about three middle aged women (which I am member of this club) and their quest for romance while balancing careers, cancer and over indulged adult children. I think if the author had focused more on the friendships and the careers, and less on the token romance, there may have been more depth to the characters.
This book had its moments, but overall it seemed to be a cross between Sex and the City 50+ style and General Hospital. Not my favorite genre.

A beautifully crafted memoir that takes us into the intimate friendship of two women that only people that are fortunate to have "those kinds of friends" might understand. The tragic loss of such a young life and the agonizing grief that wraps itself around the author is brutal. The grief, however, is not what we take away from this book. What we take away is how our friendships are as much a part of us as the air we breathe.

I am a long time fan of Elizabeth Berg. However, I am normally not a "short story collection" fan. With that being said, I thought this collection was great. Anyone that has reached "middle age" can identify with most of the characters in some way. I laughed a lot and cried a little reading this book.

Brilliant. Mary Karr once again does not disappoint. She shares her life with a raw authenticity that causes me to look at my own life with the same truthful mirror. Mary begins this memoir as a high school graduate that heads to California to distant herself from her dysfunctional childhood. Mary's life is riddled with alcohol and self-doubt. She dreams of becoming a poet. We follow her life as she marries "up" and becomes a mother to her precious son. We watch her begin her long and sometimes painful spiritual journey as she integrates her past and future to make her own way. I could not put this book down.
