“Anna Quindlen is no doubt a very gifted author as she has proven time and time again with her eloquent prose and interesting past protagonists. We are introduced to the main characters in this novel little by little. Mary Beth is the typical upper middle class suburban mother of three teenage children....never knowing if her parenting was the best but always invested in her family and never far from the hub of everyday activities. We watch the oldest daughter Ruby, a senior in high school, come into her own as she finds her unique style and as her interests matures leaving her long time boyfriend and neighbor Kiernan behind, much to his dismay. The twins, Alex and Max are fraternal, headed to high school and could not have personalities that are more different. Glen, an Ophthalmologist, clearly loves his wife and children even if he is a bit in the background. Quindlen develops these characters in a way that connects the reader to their psyche. I especially enjoyed getting to know Ruby. We know there is a tragedy coming.....what is it?.....when is it going to happen?...I found that somewhat distracting as the novel progressed and when the tragedy finally happens it is so unbelievable and horrific that is was difficult to finish the book. But finish it I did and I really don't know why. The book left me feeling empty and wondering what was the point? We all know that bad things happen to good people and tragedy can strike anyone, anywhere, anytime.....but honestly, (spoiler) after wiping out over half of the characters in the novel.....there was not a whole lot left to build upon.....I give five stars to the author's craft and zero stars for this particular sad tale. ”
