A great day is a stack of books, a pot of homemade soup simmering on the stove, a fire in the fireplace. No makeup. Comfy clothes. No cell phone. And of course, my husband and family.
A typical day. Wife, Mother of four young adult children and two grandchildren (not quite the empty nest). Adult only child daughter of two loving... more »

Haven Kimmel is a very talented author. The characters in this novel stay with you long after reading the last page.

I read Solace for Leaving Early by Kimmel and was expecting a good book and it turned out to be a great book. I immediately decided to read Something Rising expecting to read a great book and it was ok.

Awesome. Being in the "middle place" myself, I found myself identifying with the author time and time again. Told with candor and a great sense of humor, as well.

I can remeber when Kaye Gibbons was one of my favorite authors and I thought her books were the best. This was the pick of our local book club this month so I was excited to begin reading the book. I was disappointed. Not one of her better novels, in my opinion.

  • A Drinking Life: A Memoir
    • Rated 4 stars

A poirgnant memoir by Peter Hamill. Mr Hamill grew up on the tough streets of NYC "the neighborhood" rough and tumble with an alcoholic father and a strong loving mother. Growing up in poverty sometimes using cardboard to line his worn shoes in the brutal winter and always life revolved around "drink". Mr. Hamill tells his story in a "matter of fact" manner. "The drink" followed Hamill into his successful journalism career until he changed his family tree and said no more. A little slow at times, but a good read.

A beautifully written novel that reads like a memoir. This book is written in a series of letters in post WWII. I felt transplanted into a different era among great friends that I wanted to spend more time with long after reading the last page.

A great memoir. I could not put this book down. I finished reading this book wanting to know more about the author's family and the events that happened subsequent to the return of Julia and her brother, David from the abusive "Christian boot camp" in Escuela Caribe. If you are looking for a light read, this is not the book to choose.

  • Once Upon a Day: A Novel

I found this book boring, unrealistic and hard to finish. I was expecting more from this novel based on other customer reviews and prior novels that I have read by the author.
