What are the best short stories you've read so far? I love short stories too, but don't always find many I like...there's the perfect short story: brief, engaging, leaves you wanting more but also somehow satisfied in your bones, not left pawing in the air...do you know what I mean?
Some excellent excellent books here.
hello love! long time no see eh? What have you been up to? I'm up to my ears in studying (this month is end-of-term for us here in Brazil), and reading so much amazing stuff that I fear my brain might explode from overload. And reading (sort of) decently in French too, go me! :) *hugs*
I just watched "Love in the time of Cholera" and Javier Bardem was really good. I wonder though, how close was it to the novel? Have you watched it? I guess I have to read the novel again... wrote a review of the movie in my multiply, haha.
You're kidding, "Immortality" is one of your favorite books? I've been reading it on and off second semester and can't seem to really finish it... It's a little too metafictional for me. Why is it one of your faves? :-)
I'm really into Eco's book, but this week something even more wonderful has happened: I've oficially finished the first part of Goethe's Faust, which I've been reading on and off for months. I own a deluxe edition with introductions to every scene and a gazillion footnotes "contextualizing" damn near every word, which is _brilliant_, but makes me feel as though I have to read it again now, if only to savour the poetry. Alas, last week the second part of the Quijote edition I own (amazing bilingual text, priceless translation!) was published at last, so I'm now in a dilemma...As for House: if you've started season four, and you're into Cut-throatbitch, I highly recommend you catch up. Seriously ;]
Michael Chabon? Haven't heard of him I am sorry to say! I think I'll like Auster even though I am yet to read him! What other books by him would you recommend? "Oracle Night" & "Travels in the Scriptorium" looks promising. Have you read them? Have you read David Mitchell's "Cloud Atlas"? I found it amazing! Those are the kind of books I love to read. Yes I am interested in the modern novel. Your recommendations are solicited! :)
For a nice introduction to Borges check out J.M Coetzee's Stranger Shores : Essays 1986-1999
I love Artemio Cruz. That's the only Fuentes I've read and already I am in love with him. I immediately went and bought his latest novel "The Eagles throne" It looks very promising and many of my friends loved it. Looking forward to reading it. Also picked up Auster's "New York Trilogy" (which I notice is amongst your favorites) and Pessoa's "Book of disquiet" The new Llosa novel "Bad Girl" seems to be pretty good too. Yeah save up and buy "Collected fictions" Its cheaper than buying all the volumes separately. And with Borges you'd always want to have his complete works handy. I'll check out the "Savage Detectives" (ie if i can find it here [[sigh]]) Anything else you'd recommend?
I love the Latin Americans too! But unfortunately their books are little hard to come by here in India :( Haven't heard of Roberto Bolano! Do you like Fuentes?
Yes, Borges is bewitching isn't he? Labyrinths has some of his best stories, but i prefer the (relatively) new Andrew Hurley translation. Borges is at his luminous best when rendered into English by Hurley. Go buy "The Collected Fictions". It contains all of Borges' short stories. It's worth every cent, believe me! Failing which buy Fictions and The Aleph (make sure the translation is by Hurley). These two contains his best stories. I also like "A universal history of iniquity". His essays are also essential. Try "Selected Non-fictions"
Multiple editions of the same book! That is a sign of an inveterate reader (and book collector)! We seem to have a few books in common. Have you read Borges? I am a die-hard fan. I never hesitate to recommend him to my friends.
I read your review of "The Beach". It's pretty good. The part about reading the book because of the cover struck a chord. It has happened to me too! I discovered some of my favorite books becuase I liked the cover and decided to give it a try! A book can be judged by its cover it seems ;)
Charlene. I have so much to tell you. Seriously. Not about my family, either.
Omigod! I need to read all your books! Galing.
Isn't the Norton Antology of Modern and Contemporary Poetry great? I'm using it for class, and am very very happy with it :-) How are you?
Welcome to the fiction effect group, ciel! Looks like you and I have quite a few books in common on our shelves (Roth, Nabokov, etc., etc.). Please feel free to join in the discussions or start a thread of your own! -marc
i read gun, with occasional music. how can you go wrong with a title like that? heehee. i like the glib feel he has going for him. but he surprised me. i'm currently reading one of those america's best compilations of mystery stories and pamuk's other colours. my head's full. i like the wallace essay about irony!
