Chesscoach

I am a Christian, a father, a husband, a lover of foreign languages, a chess coach, a reader of classic literature, an investor, a chess player, a gardener, a tennis player, and a book collector. I read about two books a month, mostly non-fiction nowadays.

The books on my shelf are limited 1) to those I have personally read and 2) ... more »

Vous avez lu L'Iliade en grec ? Que je suis jalouse. J'ai pris un cours de grec au lycée et on a étudié l'Odyssée un peu, mais j'ai tout oublié.

Je cours m'inscrire au groupe "French Books"!

I appreciated your review of Du côté de chez Swann, which I just finished, so I thought I'd come over and see what else you'd reviewed :-)

I read the Odyssey in the Lattimore translation first as well and then Fagles when everyone was going wild about it. Fagles is beautiful, but I have to say I'm partial to the traditional poetry of Lattimore. I read the Iliad translated by Robert Fitzgerald because that was the only one my bookstore had, but considering that it's already a bit harder to read, I bet the Fagles would be good. His verse is very clear...

Hi Chesscoach. Thanks for the Friend invitation. I haven't been playing chess much lately. I need to get back into it... but things come up.

Thanks for the recommendation of "Religious Literacy". I'm sure I would enjoy it a lot. As you can see I've got quite a few unread books on my shelf. My primary resolution for 2008 is to not buy any new books until I've read the 78 on my shelf that are waiting to be picked up. I enjoyed looking at your shelf and find all the classical reading very impressive. That's on my list of things to do one day. Can you answer a few questions for me? What is the group disciple ship shelf for? Are all those books the group is reading or are they books the group recommends? Where do you get the hearts and the green bookmarks I see in some of your books? What do they mean?

Ah, thanks. But just because it's on "My Shelf" doesn't mean I've read it. "My Shelf", for me, is representative of what I've read and what's actually on the shelf, waiting to be read. Maybe if they change the format here on Shelfari, I'll separate the read from the unread. But that seems too much like work to me.

just as an experiment I have invested some money in Sharebuilder to see if I could beat my mutual funds. So far, it has not worked but then I may have started this at the top of the market. I have tried to research the stocks first.

Actually, I don't read much sci fi myself anymore. Probably, the only thing I have read recently is The Road by McCarthy. I also mainly read nonfiction. I see you are also an investor. Do you manage your own portfolio? I have tried to do this a bit but my mutual funds seem to do better than my self-directed portfolio.

I used to play some. I was a postal master and almost an expert OTB. I was playing a lot on internet but now I am reading instead.
