Vibius Domitius: Vibius Domitius is Titus Pullus' closest friend. They meet at when Titus was 10, when Titus rescued Vibius when he was having his head dunked into a chamber pot by two of the local bullies, Marcus and Aulus. Where Titus is a large boy, Vibius is short, although he is very strong. Looking at them, they make an unlikely pair, but they quickly become best friends, both of them sharing the dream of one day marching for Rome. To that end, they pester a veteran of Sertorius' army who, because of the loss of an eye they call Cyclops, to help train them for the Legions. Starting when Titus is 12, and Vibius 13, Cyclops puts them through a grueling regimen. At first it was mainly to discourage the pair and get them out of Cyclops's hair, but he soon sees that the boys are deadly serious. Vibius, while he doesn't possess the raw physical talent of Titus, nevertheless demonstrates useful traits of his own. Where Vibius is overwhelmingly strong, Vibius is quick, and like Titus, he possesses a deep, burning ferocity that comes from not only being smaller than other boys, but the youngest boy in a family of three other brothers. It's because Vibius is the youngest son and there is no room for him in his father's business as a tanner that is Vibius' motivation to join the Legions. That, and to share adventures with his best friend.
