Mrs. Edmunds (Darla's mother): Mrs. Edmunds saves Alex's life by allowing him into their home. She asks her daughter Darla to stitch up Alex's wound and, afterwards, incorporates him into her family as he recovers from his surgery. She is resourceful and loving. Mrs. Edmunds makes lots and lots of corn pone. She is polite and strong. She also enjoys reading. Before he leaves the farm, Alex hugs her for a long time and realizes that he cares about her almost as though she's his own mother.After Alex and Darla leave on a trip into town, they return to a devastating scene involving Mrs. Edmunds in Chapter 28.
