Mr. Wellington: Jane's father, a well-to-do man of business who admittedly hired strikebreakers and the like and had no bad feelings about it. He was a balding, pot-bellied man, with thick black eyebrows; he smoked cigars. He obviously felt his daughter was "just a useless female" except if she made a correct marriage.
