   Mimi Corcoran: Deke Simmons' girlfriend and then wife. Mimi recommended Jake to Deke as a substitute teacher and he obtained the position. She is retiring as librarian of the high school in Jodie. She has recently been diagnosed with cancer and is expected to live less than one year. She and Deke get married and go off to Mexico to seek alternative therapies since cancer treatments are primitive in 1963.
