Margarethe: Margarethe, widow of the Englishman Jack Fisher, brings herself and her two homely daughters to Holland in search of her grandfather and hopes for a better life. Though not altogether delightful, she does find solace in a new town, until her own doings get the better of her.
“Only he with the severed ear can apprehend what the sweetest music must sound like. Our ailments complete us.”
