Karl M. Johnson: The previous head of the C.D.C.'s special pathogens branch and a scientist who ventured into a hot zone himself. Was a virus hunter whose home terrain had been the rain forests of Central and South America. Ran Special Pathogens Branch of the C.D.C. Has since left the C.D.C., and he now spends a great deal of his time fly-fishing for trout in Montana. He does consulting work on various matters, including the design of pressurized hot zones.
