The Ring destroyed him, causing Smeagol to develop another personality, Gollum. He slunk from his cave when Bilbo Baggins stole the Ring from him in a desperate attempt to flee the evil creature. He continually looks for the Ring, drawn to it and never able to let it go. Eventually, he finds Frodo on his journey to Mordor, and Frodo takes pity upon hmim, much like his uncle did fifty years before in the dark cave. Like Bilbo,he was preserved by the Ring, and thus he is very old.
