General John Gordon MacArthur: A retired World War I hero, he is the first to accept that no one will leave the island alive. He is accused of sending a lieutenant under his command, Arthur Richmond, to his death in battle because he was his wife's lover. He is the third to die, found sitting on the shore, staring out to sea. He was killed by a blow to the back of his head.
