Charles Walker: Hollis Lomax's star student. He is admitted one of Stoner's classes as a graduate student early in his PhD, but does little work for the course and ultimately in the final assignment simply derides Stoner's work in an arrogant and disruptive way. Stoner quickly realizes Walker is lazy and smug and fails him for the course, which embitters Walker. The fail leads to a review of Walker's place in the PhD program. Stoner humiliates Walker during the review by revealing his shallow understanding of the literature and Lomax's doting obsession with his student which has blinded him to Walker's personal failings. Infuriated, Lomax threatens to bring charges of prejudice against Walker by Stoner on account of the former's disabilities. Stoner is saved by Finch but Lomax never forgives and after becoming head of the department makes Stoner's professional life extremely difficult, effectively ending Stoner's career advancement. Walker is eventually readmitted to the program anyway and Stoner's actions do not prevent him from getting his PhD.
