Hilly despises Celia, a bottle blonde woman from Sugar Ditch, Mississippi, because she married Hilly's long time boyfriend, and because Celia is from the wrong side of the tracks. Celia is so far out of the loop that she is willing to hire Minny as a maid when no one else will, because she hasn't heard all the lies that Hilly has spread about Minny. Celia is discovered to be an alcoholic and for that reason, is unable to stay pregnant, having had at least five miscarriages.
