Carlo Campanati, aka Pope Gregory XVII: Brother-in-law and friend of Ken Toomey, Carlo is a wordly, wily churchman who eventually rises to become the Archbishop of Milan and then the Pope. Carlo becomes a candidate for canonization after his death, and Toomey is asked to provide his account of a miracle that the late pontiff supposedly performed. In appearance, demeanour, attributes and achievements, as well the circumstances of his papal election, Carlo is an amalgam of the two Popes most associated with the Second Vatican Council, John XXIII and Paul VI.
