I read obsessively. Sometimes it occurs to me that I could accomplish so much more if only I didn't love to read. But, think of all the reading I'd miss out on! I read an average of 75 books a year. I also love to hike and watch movies. Plus, I walk for an hour every day and listen to an audio book. I began reading at age 4 and started... more »

This book is first rate. I'm so impressed with this author, esp. because it is her debut novel. I loved the story and the way it was told--6 different characters speaking from their point of view. I was sorry it ended.

I read this book years ago and only recently found it again here on Shelfari. I had never forgotten it but couldn't remember the title. I am currently re-reading it and I hate putting it down. It's a little dated (written in 1988) so there are no cell phones or computers but the concepts hold up. If you're looking for a fast, fun pager turner, this is it. Time travel is always fun.

Another good one by Chris Bohjalian. This one is more difficult to figure out and once I got going, I had trouble putting it down. I was initially put off by the inclusion of fictional characters (Jay Gatsby) but it finally worked for me.

I began this book with great anticipation since I had loved Daughter's Keeper. This one was a disappointment and I'm not sure why I kept at it. The main character was annoying and it just seemed like a very shallow, surface kind of story with a predictable ending. Also, the 5 year old child was just too much. Too bright, too mature, too knowing. All the characters were somewhat one dimensional.

I love this series and all the books by Laurie R. King. She captures Sherlock Holmes beautifully and it's great to have such a strong female character in Mary Russell.

This book was such a page turner and at the same time a very compelling story of "what if"? Very thought provoking. What would I do in a similar situation?

I love Jane Smiley but this one is just too long. It should have been Five Days in the Hills. Interesting story and well worth reading but it was a bit like guests who stay too long. I just wanted it to end.

This was a book I couldn't put down but actually had to occasionally just to take a breather. It's really intense but I loved it. I particularly loved the fact that it is told from each character's perspective. Jane Hamilton has written some really dark stuff (Book of Ruth) so I went to hear her speak and was amazed to find out how normal she is. I think she grew up in the suburbs with regular, loving parents who stayed together. I don't know where she gets her material!

I loved this book and wish there were more like it. It was a fascinating part of history and I found myself searching my world atlas trying to figure out their journey.
