A wise man once sat in the audience & cracked a joke.
All laughed like crazy. After a moment he cracked the same joke again and a little less people laughed this time.
He cracked the same joke again & again, When there was no laughter in the crowd,
    he smiled and said

"When u can't laugh on the same joke again & again, then why do u keep crying over the same thing over and over again .

    Thanks Catherine,
I like those questions as a kind of "thought stimulant." I find that when I first finish a book there is so much running about in my head that I'm not always what I feel about it all, and it seems a waste of a good story not to get more from it than just details of plot. The characters are like real people, I guess, and it's nice to get to know them a bit and just to ponder. Guess that's what I'm trying to say in my very awkward way...
BTW, our local library doesn't haveJumpstart the World but I've asked them to purchase it. This takes a bit of time, but hopefully they will get it (fingers crossed). Or I could just buy it but Borders don't have it yet, and that's usually the best bet.

    Hi Catherine,
I just finished your book! I posted a review which was my instant and spontaneous reaction straight after closing the book. I did feel the suspense leading up to Vida and Richard's meeting at the North Rim, but it was just a bit drawn out for me. I'm not sure if you wanted the reader to worry that they might miss each other(?) but I just knew that they would certainly meet. Have to say I didn't like them sleeping together, not that I'm a prude - it just felt a bit off somehow. I even wondered if her heart would have been ok...???? Esther was great and I loved that bit about her patting the dog's head just before she died. She had such a positive influence in Vida's emergence into the big world and I loved that. I also loved that she went to Germany, though I figured she would. At one stage I found myself disliking Abigail but this seems to happen to me with your books and I'm learning that I need to just hang on and be patient because you have something important on the way to teach the reader, which I always love. Maybe that's not your intention, but I always find I'm pondering your books and the characters long after the close of the story. I love that most of all. And how hard that must have been for Abigail not to be needed as much any more, when she was the one who held everything together and kept Vida alive for so long!! A total life adjustment for her!
Anyway, a great read, though not my very favourite. I'm going to look for you other new release - a YA novel?
Oh, and I was just wondering....do you write the book group questions at the back? I've read them and plan to spend some time thinking them over in my journal this week. I really love those questions just for my own explorations, know what I mean?

I quit Hate List in the end. I just need that stand out factor in a book, with so many out there I really want to read. Know what I mean?
I'm reading yours now and really enjoying it! I like Esther and was a bit disappointed when it seemed she'd disappeared from the story. I kinda wondered what had been the purpose of putting her there, but she's just come back. (Vida has just had her hotel stay and gone home again, sneaking in for a quiet chat with Esther before facing Abigail.) Richard is becoming more intriging as well, and I'm wondering where he and vida are heading. It all seems unlikely - that they might end up a couple long term - but I'm turning pages wanting to see what form their relationship will take. Something feels really wrong with Abigail now but then theirs was a co-dependent relationship for so long. What will happen to Abigail now, I'm wondering, now that she isn't needed to the same degree...that must be hard. And Vida seems to be the least lost of the 3 with the world opening up to her with all its possibilities. .....
I'm rambling but I'm wondering what you have in store for these three. I'm enjoying the journey so far :)
    Thanks!

    Hi Catherine,
I see you're reading The Hate List. I've just started it. Did you like it? finished yet? so far I'm finding it pretty dull, but I'll persevere a bit more. And I bought Second Hand Heart for my holiday!!!! Just finished The Quiet Game by Greg Iles which was a great read full of twists and turns and lots of action and good characters. Then today I read Prey by Lurlene McDaniel which I also really enjoyed.
I'm on holiday so reading heaps late at night and early mornings then having fun during the day with my hubby and 2 boys.
Hope your holidays are fun too! :)

Me again, Hi Catherine, It's great to be able to catch you by chance while I'm actually reading so I can ask you these questions - thanks!
I got it that the prologue was in the voice of chris, then we went to Reuben in chapter one, but what I wasn't sure about was at the end of that first chapter : "From The Other Faces Behind the Movement" by Chris Chandler. Is that from an article Chris wrote about Rueben? I'm sorry to sound like such a thicket!

    SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!
    SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!

    Hi Catherine,
I have a quick question: Am I right in my understanding that both Reuben and Chris have been injured in the war and have similar disfigurements? Or is Chris writing about Reuben in that early chapter? He mentioned a former fiance, though, so I guessed they had that amazing coincidence in common. And if I'm right, did you give them that in common for a reason? (If you can't explain any of this without giving away the story, please don't worry.) I just want to make sure I'm "getting it" before I get frustrated!
    Thanks Catherine,
    F :)

BTW, what I meant when I said every single book so far has been the same, was that each one of your books has been a great read, not that they were literally all the same......um......but you got that didn't you?

    Hi Catherine,
I've just started reading Pay It Forward, after a few restless days trying to settle into a book! Happy to say I love it already. Every single book so far has been the same (this is my 4th) and I'm so grateful to have discovered your work! Thank you sooooo much! I've learnt to be a bit patient, too, when it comes to your books and to look forward to a satisfying ending every time. I'm promoting you all over the place! If only you could come to NZ and do a tour sometime - your books are sadly not well known here, and I'm sure that would change! Anyway, just thought I'd touch base - will look forward to a chat when I'm finished Pay It Forward. I've been checking out your shelf, too, and some of your recent reads look interesting. I just finished a YA title called Saving Rafael (can't remember the author off the top of my head) which was really good, though maybe I'd have targeted it a little younger than YA. The characters were teens, but the style felt younger which might feel a bit babyish to teens. Mind you, readers of YA from my observations tend to be younger anyway - maybe 10-13yrs. It was a good story though, and felt similar to Carol Matas's After The War and the other one I read Auslander - maybe just subject matter. I read a lot of Holocaust material (fiction and non-fiction.) Have you ever considered a Holocaust story? If I wrote one myself, I'd probably want to reverse the popular theme and instead of writing about the plight of Jews, maybe the story of a Nazi family and their struggles with what they were forced to do - maybe a friendship with a Jewish family. I guess something along the lines of Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, but maybe adult fiction based on something like the Laurence Rees books - good Germans who committed unspeakable atrocities under orders and the battle of conscience vs duty and how they coped with fellow officers who enjoyed what they were doing to the Jews. I read a great book called Winter Journey which was about a forensic dentist in Australia who returned to Poland to assist with an exhumation (based on a true event - a massacre of Jews) and the story was about a community of Polish Jews and Catholics who had lived harmoniously together for generations and then on wartime turned on one another out of fear and to protect their own - great book!
I'm sorry I got a bit carried away there - I just love books so much! (when I can settle into a good one, that is!) Lol
Talk soon. Happy reading and writing, Catherine!

    I Love you

I love you to the moon
I love you to the end of the planets.
I love you till there's no love in the equator,
I love you knowing nothing could be greater,
I will love you from now until decades later.
Let me love you now, not later.
    Let me love you to
    Northern skies,
    Western hemispheres,
    Without worries, fears or cares.
    Allow me to love you,
    Until you care, blossom up,
    Open up-heal from old wounds
that you suddenly, slowly start to share.
Our love is genuine-it can't compare.
Now your love has opened up wide
Like a brand new gift on Christmas day
See what happens when you allow
    Someone to love you.

Pity, huh? Auslander is shaping up well. It's written by Paul Dowswell. Off the top of my head, I don't know what nationality he is, but I'm going to look him up and see what else he's written.

Did you like Parrotfish? I HATE the way I am with being unable to settle into books easily, but I quit that one yesterday...and several others including Rachel Ward's. I've just started Auslander, which my son recommended and the librarians at his school all loved. Here's hoping! Then I have one of yours, which I know I'll love - The Year of My Miraculous Reappearance. It's just so frustrating being so impatient, but that's me! lol. When I go to the library I always come home with about 20 books so that I can be sure there will be about 5 I'll finish and enjoy.
Is the Southern Book Festival a big one? For children? I was Christchurch Coordinator for Storylines festival, which is to promote the works of NZ Children's authors and illustrators. It was held in the city on August 15th and we had around 4000 attend, which is pretty large scale for Chch. In other words, it was a big success! I don't like the leadership role and probably won't take it on again, but the organisational side I loved! I'm a real planner in all areas of life, such as our family holidays, which drives my family a bit nuts, so I'm trying to relax on it and be more spontaneous for at least half of our time away. I should have become a research assistant or something like that as I love to search out info - I'm very resourceful, I guess.
I hope your panel goes really well. You're probably experienced in these things by now, yes? It must be a great feeling to meet face to face people who just love your books, especially children/teens. And very cool to meet other authors! I definitely had a few favourites among the Storylines participants, though they were all a very talented group.
    Happy reading and writing!
