What's new? We are fighting off fall colds. The weather is gorgeous, but the trees have barely begun to change. Gotta take a cat to the vet today after I get done taking hubby to the doctor. I've been sick for a few days, but hubby gets a cough and he is off to the doctor, the big baby! He hates it when I am sick, as he wants to be waited upon. Oh well! Gotta run up north, as mom has been in and out of the hospital. She got a bad case of Cat Scratch Fever (cellulitis) in her arm. Have to take her in for heart tests on Friday. Just hope I'm done with whatever I have, so I don't make her sick. Finally have gotten back into reading! I've read 3 Cozies so far this week. I only listened to one book last month. Guess I wasn't in the right frame of mind, as there was lots of stress going around here. Daughter had a miscarriage (which was not a bad thing), my Mom's congestive heart failure put her in the hospital, hubby has been having bizarre passing out episodes and stepson was up north for his Mom's wedding. I just need a sanity break. Yup, I've had to hold it all together....great fun. But other than that, things are going well. We turned 20 gallons of concord grapes into 16 1/2 pints of grape butter. We love it. It's thick like apple butter and soooo grape flavored. Yum. We won't be having many grapes next year, as they got pruned back. We took down our weeping willow to make room for more fruit trees out back. Not much else new. Gotta get ready to haul semi-sick hubby to doctor. Hope all is well!
My hubby' boys finally forgave him around the time we married. I think military families are not easy to grow up in. Hubby is lucky, as he was a violent man in his military days, but his dad wasnt a good father either. It takes time and lots of luck and prayer.
I need to get the bedding washed and take Lulu to get teeth pulled. Lu gets ulcers in her mouth, so teeth pulling was recommended this past week. I'm still dragging. Taking my vitamins like a good girl. Haven't read anything in days. Maybe I'll nap on the couch! Sleep day.
If you get a knock on the door you might find Naughty Nellie The Tiny Torti Terrorist. What a monster packed into a 1 lb kitten. She thinks I am a tree. She is only good when she is sleeping. I've had many many kittens, but she is our resident evil one. Gotta trim her claws.
Hubby and I are enjoying a few kid free weeks. Crystal moved to Missouri and Scott is up in Minnesota for his Mom's wedding. Peace and quiet, except for the aforementioned kitten and my hubby's blaring TV (won't wear his hearing aids and gets mad when I can't hear him over the TV!) I've been hanging out in our library. But, hubby feels ignored, so I try to read in the family room. I just adore alone time. Reminds me of when I was single. Even though hubby can't do anything, he sure tries to keep me busy. I try to get things done while he naps. But, today I am so tired. Haven't slept well in a week. No reason that I know of, just can't sleep. Mom was in the hospital, but is home now and doing well, or so she says. Best friend 's mom died the same week. Thank goodness I don't teach anymore. The A/C died in the scoop and it's been near 100 all week. Maybe that's my problem. I hate hot weather. Oh well, such is life.
Hope this finds you well and reading ! I read Lovely Bones a few years ago. It didn't really thrill me. It was ok, but I just couldn't get into it .
The Lovely Bones...no, I don't remember it being depressing. I guess some people would call the subject matter depressing so maybe that's what that lady meant? I don't really shock easily, and the dark stuff attracts me for some reason (I'm odd?), but it was a good story. Have you seen the movie? I don't want to say too much about it, just that for me the ending didn't work. You'll have to decide that for yourself, though, right? I can't say a lot without ruining it for you with a spoiler! LOL
We're all good here. The boys had holidays for a few weeks, but time moves so fast that they've already been back at school for 3 weeks now. Liam is on the home stretch. English is still pretty full on, but the other subjects are gearing up for exam revision. He's applying flat out for scholarships from the NZ universities and we head up to Wellington on Friday and Auckland on Saturday for their university open days. I don't really know where he's at with the Dickinson College scholarship. Last time we spoke he was still going to apply, and that's any time now, but he's pretty stressed with all this stuff so I'm trying to let him be as much as poss. I know he applied to a Law firm here for a scholarship which (if he got it) would bond him to them for 3 years after graduation....but that's years off, as a Law degree is 5-6 years in NZ (depending on where and what you're doing exactly) because you have to do a double degree. He was toying with Commerce and Law at one stage but has now decided on Arts and Law, probably majoring in History/Classics or something like that. Lots of decisions ahead still. Poor kid. They have to decide so young (he's only 17) and it's such a stressful time. Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy - the stress I mean.
Paddy is going so well this year. He got one of the main parts in the school's major production and he's really into drama and his drums. He's captain of the A basketball team and is playing better and better. Plus he's only a term off starting High School, so also growing up fast. He's just been away on a St John camp and has an orchestra camp coming up. Great life these kids have! I'm enjoying seeing him blossom the way he is and with his usual spirit and sense of adventure! Such a fun kid!
Great to hear Chelsea had a good time over here. If the timing had been different we might have met, but I still think a visit to Christchurch would be more fun a few years from now. A bleak place atm.
You sound as if you had your own holiday, too! You sound as if you're enjoying life and full of beans as usual!
How are you getting on with Linda Castillo's books btw? I've read the whole Kate Burkholder series and have just bought the special edition Ebook which I'm looking forward to :)
Having a quiet weekend after two really busy ones and just as well since I've got a cold :( No big deal, but I'd try and get some sympathy if it would do me any good, but with a household full of males, well....good luck with that, Fiona ! LOL
Sandy doing well atm after a rough patch. I'm so in love with her it's hard to watch her suffer, but after her shots it's hard to believe there is anything wrong as she responds so well! The interval between them is getting shorter, but for now, they work well.
Must go sort some food (again)!
Lovely Bones is not a happy story but I thought it was worth while to read. It has been 3 years since I have read it so some of the details I have forgotten. I gave it 4 stars so it must have not been that depressing for me. Keep reading and see if you like it. I believe it is a short book so it is not a huge investment.
OMG! Remind me never to take up beading in this home! As it is , I've taken 3 to the vet this month for various ailments. ALL of my cats are house cats. I won't let them out since my Yo disappeared. I think there are 23 cats. My step daughter is taking 2 of hers when she moves to Missouri at the end of the month. I'll miss the cats, but relieved to have her move out. Gotta clean the guest room which she trashed in 5 days. She says it is clean. I don't call garbage piled under the bed and stuff all over the floor including dishes, clean. Yuck, what a mess. My garden is worthless this year. I got 2 lbs of beans yesterday. I think I'll make a boiled dinner with ham, new potatoes and beans. Yum. Still wanting to make dilled creamed green beans. This year I have tons of dill but o cucumbers to pickle. I am going nuts without canning to do. So, I've been reading. Read the first 2 Discworld books by Pratchett...I'm trying to read them in order this time. It will take a while as there are 54 books in the series. I'm reading the Phryne Fisher series by Greenwood and am 1/3 through the Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters. Darn, she died last week so that ends that series and I loved it. It's my third time of reading the series, too. Keeps me out of trouble, sort of! It's peace and quiet except for the cicadas and purring cats. Gotta' go do exciting things like loading the dishwasher and throw a load of towels in the washer. I am soooo glad that I am retired, as school started this week and I don't miss it at all! Best friend calledme and gave me the school rundown. It seems that things are crazier than ever. Don't think that I will even sub this year as it isn't fun anymore. I'd like the $ for working on the house, but the house has lasted 121 years, so it can just wait for the next project. Hubby wants to add a handicapped en suite bathroom but it can wait. We would have to tear out the A/C unit and I'm not ready for dealing with that. Plus he wants a PI k bathroom! Yuk! So, I'm just going to enjoy our newfound peace without our stepdaughter's daily drama. I may break down and vacuum. Hubby traded I our 2 old Kirbies for a new one with all the bells and whistles. It makes short work of cat hair. They say a bag will last 3 months. Ha! Bet they've never been up against a home like mine! Well, take care! Enjoy this early fall.
How did the kitty sitting go? Gotta' run over to my neighbor's today and pick peaches. They have tons this year and offered to let us pick! Yum! Need to look up some peach canning recipes. My stepson makes jam, but I want to make some spiced peaches for the holidays. Stepdaughter dropped off more cats. Enough is enough. All I do is run cats to the vet lately. Can't allow them to get sick and have it spread through our clowder. I've lost count of the critters. Too many is too many. Vet sure likes taking our $ though! Nothing like buying 200 lbs of litter every week . Outrageous. All I do lately is clean up after cats and my hubby. He's not doing real well. Hope the doc can figure out what is going on. Oh well, the house is asleep so I get some time to just sit and read. Hope all is well. I need to go make a pot of coffee. Got down in the 50s last night! This has been such a nice cool summer! I love it.
Enjoy! We've been battling with the VA over hubby's wheelchairs. The van lift for his 300 lb electric chair isn't cooperative and a tire came off the wheel on his manual chair. VA is usually speedy to repair/replace, but it has been 2 wks. Grrr. I need a break! Got a new kitten in Thurs. she is a tiny torti and would do anything for chicken, kitten chow not so much! We are back up to 18 critters. Looking in books for herbed olive oil recipes. I need to buy a few of those fancy looking herb bottles. Scott is making a basket of home canned goods for his Mom's wedding present. I suggested the herbed oils. Scott loves to can and makes fantastic, pickles, jelly and jam. We are loading up a pretty basket. I think it will be a lovely present. Maybe throw in a bottle of our local wine , etc.
His mom and I get along fantastic (my hubby's 1st wife). Wish hubby's second wife was such a crazy witch. ( I am trying sooo hard to be kind, but the woman is nuts!) Ok, I'm digressing! Anyhow
It is not a terrible book, it had a great story line, but most of it was just like 'she went over and opened her curtains, made some breakfast and went to the shop' blah blah blah! It was a lot of just day to day stuff! So I got a little lazy with reading it and would not even touch it for a couple of days!
What else has everyone said about it?
Yes it is a alright book so far! A very easy read as it narrated by the 5 year old imaginary friend! But yes very different, and its always nice to have a change.
Yes I feel exactly the same about Kindles. So many people who own one ask me why I don't buy myself one. There are so many reasons! I think I just like going and actually buying it, reading the back, buying it and having that anticipation all the way home to go and read it! Also the actual feeling of a book in your hands! But I am starting to lose space to store them all!
I love Cape May! Used to go there when my sister lived in Dover years ago. So much fun!! We are going to plan more trips around bases, I think. After a really wet spring it has gone dry. Need to water everything almost daily. However the weeds still grow and I hate weeding! We found poison ivy in a back flower bed. Not fun. I've got to make a shopping run today. Nothing else exciting. Want to finish Inferno and then get going on my errands. Take care.
I have been exactly the same recently. I finished a book called One Moment One Morning two days ago which took me almost 3 weeks to finish. Have you ever read a book where there just isn't much going on? It was pretty boring! Hopefully the book I am reading now is going to be a lot better. I have read some good reviews on it. It's called Memoirs of a imaginary friend. Have you heard of it? I have only read a couple of chapters so far. I am hoping to have a nice long summer of just reading! I have set myself a goal to read quite a lot of books for this year but the progress is pretty slow! So I'm going to really start concentrating on reading more now! Have you read any great books recently?
