I grew up not enjoying reading. In fact, I hated it. I couldn't get through a high school assignment when there was a novel to read. That changed eventually -- slowly over time. In my late teens I read historical romances for a while, and while working shared a few Danielle Steele novels with co-workers, but that was about it. It has been an evolution. I truthfully owe it to my kids.
I read to them their entire lives since my first was 8 months old--before naps and before bed. Daily. I learned how to enjoy reading through their eyes. My daughter has read more than five times the number of books that I've read, and she's only sixteen! So, it has rubbed off onto me. Now I'm THERE and consider myself an avid reader at last. I have even joined an evening book club at my local library.
Much of what I have on my shelf are children's books. This is so that I can share our favorites. The children's books here are very family-friendly and books if read with much gusto and voice to the children, kids should love hearing over and over again!
As for what I recommend for children (or young at heart)...read any of my five-star picture books, as they are just some, a few, of our family favorites! I give books five stars for outstanding artwork, catchy rhythmic reading, great stories, classic books, moral value, books that have been read sooo much they have fallen apart, and, of course, all those special books that have made any of my four kids giggle!
Have a great day!
