Sweet Caroline =(^.^)=

Sweet Caroline =(^.^)=

I grew up not enjoying reading. In fact, I hated it. I couldn't get through a high school assignment when there was a novel to read. That changed eventually -- slowly over time. In my late teens I read historical romances for a while, and while working shared a few Danielle Steele novels with co-workers, but that was about it. It has been... more »

I loved Time Traveler's Wife. I also loved Kavalier and Klay. Two of my favorite books from the past 5 years.

It is unfortunate, isn't it? I was a college teacher for awhile, and I came across an essay in a textbook: "How teachers make students hate reading." I was somewhat luckier in that I was more advanced than my assignments, but then I had the problem that a lot of it was too cheese. I'm glad you liked The Other Boleyn Girl--I read several of her books and hope you try her again. You might also like "Katherine" by Anya Seton.

Have you been watching "The Tudors" on cable? It's the same story as "The Other Boleyn Girl." I've been getting it on Netflix, as we don't have Showtime. But it's very good. Just curious.

No not read that I'll have to check it out. Know what you mean about book thief I think I was blubbering all the way through thought it was a fab book and loved death as the narrator. Just off to hand in my final essay of the year and then I can get on with reading some fun books rather than speech therapy text books yeah! Hope you have a fun day!

I agree the 2nd half was more interesting but as you say not particularly powerful maybe it's the lack of answers it provides in true philosophical style... If you've not read The Book Theif I highly recommend it dealing with the same subject WW2 but in an original way

Hey just finished the reader wasn't that impressed wonder if the film is better? Think a lot of other novelists have dealt with the subject better

It's the one attached to my review, or at least it was when I published the review, sometimes Shelfari suffers from edition drift. It's the Richard Pevear translation, Barnes & Noble Classics series.

  • The Ancient One

    The Ancient One says

    Hold On

Hold on to what is good,
Even if it's a handful of earth.
Hold on to what you believe,
Even if it's a tree that stands by itself.
Hold on to what you must do,
Even if it's a long way from here.
    Hold on to your life,
Even if it's easier to let go.
    Hold on to my hand,
Even if someday I'll be gone away from you.

Ooops sorry obviously having a blond day today ;-)
The novel is one of the first detective stories written i victorian literature. For a classic novel it has a very modern voice and is very absorbing that's what I remember most about reading it. The storyline unfolds around a mysterious woman in white that the central character Walter Hartright happens across late at night he decides to solve the mystery of her distress. There are a couple of good victorian villans of the moustache twirling variety in the novel just a fun read. Hope you get chance to read it!
