I grew up in a family where we were always reading - there were books all over the house.
My mother urged my brother and me to read the classics (e.g. Grapes of Wrath, War and Peace, Gone with the Wind, Old Man and the Sea, etc.) in our teenage years - we loved them all!
My dad used to hunt tigers (not for sport, only when they were bothering villagers) and aroused in me an interest in wildlife (of course, tigers in particular). He had a collection of books written by Jim Corbett, a very experienced wildlife hunter (he too did not hunt for sport but was frequently hired to hunt down and kill man-eating tigers and leopards in India). I now have that collection and read them frequently - although always in the daytime - too scary at night!
I developed an interest in reading science fiction and fantasy. My particular favorites are the Dune series, several of the Stars Wars stories, and, of course, Lord of the Rings (the latter of which I try to read again at least every 2 years!).
On the whole, I mainly read fiction although I do cross over to non-fiction if the subject interests me (such as the wildlife books I mentioned earlier).
I like to read a really good book and be able to share it with my friends. Unfortunately, I can count on the fingers of one hand those friends who really like to get into a good book - in spite of the crowds I see at bookstores, it seems to me that there aren't many of us left who would rather read than watch TV, for instance.
It also seems that every other person is trying to write a book these days and it is becoming more difficult to find good authors and, most importantly, books that you can't put down because they're written so well! I especially have this problem because I read so much, so recommendations are always welcome.
I'm excited to be on Shelfari and look forward to sharing/receiving recommendations.
I'm always open to recommendations for a great book.
