I work in a university library; have two daughters (24 and 30); spend all my free time reading; just starting to draw and paint again; beginning to write in a writers group; and am yearning to travel. I read nearly anything that comes my way, although I'm not usually drawn to science-fiction or horror or chick-lit. I've recently discovered... more »

I can't believe it was 3.5 years ago that we talked about this and joined. It's so nice that we have each other. I am feeling melancholy... missing seeing you and talking to you... and so happy that you're getting better.

Carla, I've decided that your picture needs to change... the old lady in the brown room, which looks like a prison, doesn't express who you are.

Hi Carla, my name is georgia. I see that you are the other person who read "A time remembered". I read it because I am a companian to Elsie Coe Carley (whose mother was Justine's youngest sister). Mrs. Carley asked me to read it. I thought it was very sweet, but I must confess I didn't finish it. Mrs. Carley just turned 93. Two weeks ago, we went on a sightseeing tour in Waterbury, CT. It took two passes through the streets for Mrs. Carley to recognize her grandparents home. It is a very large home. It has been maintained and split into three duplex condos. The rest of the area has not been maintained but in a blink of an eye it could look great again. iIt's interesting to take someone back to their roots and listen to their history with them.

    Well, have a good day.

Have you read NEtherland? We read it for book club and the only person who liked it was the person who picked it!! I'm almost through Olive Kitteridge.

I read (on tape) "Saturday" by Ian McEwan and didn't see it on your list. I found it good in parts and very tedious mostly.

I saw your list on the 1001 books to read before death and we like the same kinds of literature. I love Jane Eyre, I teach that book with my honors class and I want to read The House of Seven Gables I think I like the romantic/ gothic literature best. Have you ever read The Great Gatsby? What was your feeling about that? I am thinking of teaching it next year with my juniors.

    Hi Carla,
We're reading The House of Spirits in book club this month. You gave it four stars. Do you remember what you liked about it? I've only just begun. Lost Illusions was wonderfully written - not romantic or fussy - which it could have been considering the topic. One of its strengths is character interaction, description and development. The people are alive!

Good call on the "cities" book from 1001. I just started "Lost Illusions" by Honoré de Balzac. It's in the 1001 book too. So far it's interesting. It's written in old style so it's a nice change.
