I grew up in post-war UK, lived for a short time in pre-Amin Uganda and moved to Canada in the 70s; We have lived in Ontario, Manitoba and are now in British Columbia.
I have been a reader for ever, usually with 2 or 3 books on the go, my tastes all over the place. I have read all my listed books but have not listed all the books I have... more »

Good summer read - fast paced with lots of historical detail

Powerful, moving descriptions of the horrors of the WW1 trenches contrasted with the gentility and formality of pre-war life in rural France combine to make this ( fairly predictable) story of illicit love an exceptional book.

Another good read from Atkinson but not my favourite - too much back and forth.

Flavia is a delightful heroine but one tale is enough for me.

Read it on a cruise in the Med. which included a stop in Malta, but it would still be high on my list of favourites without that added interest.

A beautiful, sensual novel of young love and desire torn apart by a harrowing war.
16 year old motherless Anne and young Cambodian musician, Serey, meet in a Montreal bar and fall in love. He returns to Cambodia to look for his family and after 10 years without word Anne follows to search for him. Through this search Echlin exposes, in haunting style, the horrors of the Killing Fields of the Pol Pot years.

My first Furst - clandestine actvity (on the right side) during early WW2. Believable characters and good historical outline for the Balkans and Greece.

Mr. Bennett's dry humour is on full display here. Her Majesty discovers a library van in the palace grounds and thus discovers a whole new world - of books. She befriends a boy from the kitchen staff, a fellow reader who brings selections from various libraries for her - and in the following months the routines of Buck House are altered forever.
    A delightful, witty novella.

Beautifully conceived and written book with subtle humour. I still smile thinking of the effect Vianne would have in any small, conservative French town - and then to bring in Gypsies! Oh la la!
