I grew up in post-war UK, lived for a short time in pre-Amin Uganda and moved to Canada in the 70s; We have lived in Ontario, Manitoba and are now in British Columbia.
I have been a reader for ever, usually with 2 or 3 books on the go, my tastes all over the place. I have read all my listed books but have not listed all the books I have... more »

One of my favourite books; yes it's a much hyped "love story" but for me the relationships between the soldiers themselves, the local villagers themselves, the interactions between the two groups and especially that of Pelagia and her father, were all so finely drawn that even after all this time I still picture certain scenes in my mind.

I was surprised at how quickly I loved this book- apart from a few blatant 'Americanisms' in the text. (I hadn't realised that the authors are American). The epistolary style works perfectly with the huge variety of characters, most of whom jump off the page as real people. It is one of the few books I have re-read immediately.

    In Xanadu

Thoroughly enjoyable, light read. Dalrymple does not take himself too seriously and has a good sense of humour.

I really enjoyed the story, the way it was told, the characters.......until the end which almost spoiled the whole experience.

I read this while living in pre-Amin Uganda; it was the start of my love affair with the continent and its writers.

After a very sheltered Catholic upbringing this book opened my eyes and brain to other beliefs and ways of life; for me it was a turning point.

Very clever update on the original classic verse and delightful new drawings. "They're changing sex at Buckingham Palace!"
    Murgatroyd mutters with undisguised malice..........................
A must-have for anyone who grew up with the original.

I struggled with the writing style at the beginning, but got used to it and then the tenacity and accomplishments of this man really held my interest. I am glad I read it.

A feast of a book! I listened to this on audible and the narrator did such a wonderful job with all the accents and voices that the story and characters came to life for me. The city of Mumbai - from its squalor and poverty to the grand hotels and Bollywood dreams is a wonderful backdrop, but the characters, the good, bad and ugly are what make the book so special and memorable.
