I grew up in post-war UK, lived for a short time in pre-Amin Uganda and moved to Canada in the 70s; We have lived in Ontario, Manitoba and are now in British Columbia.
I have been a reader for ever, usually with 2 or 3 books on the go, my tastes all over the place. I have read all my listed books but have not listed all the books I have... more »

All the same you must have had a great time! I have read Atkinsons's 'Behind the Scenes in the Museum' and plan to attack Human Croquet one of these days, she is a wonderfully humorous writer and her descriptions are indeed evocative, as you say, of Scottish/British life. :) Have you read Atkinson's other books as well? Would you happen to know of a writer with similar subjects/ styles as hers?

Hi, i was reading kate atkinson's 'Emotionally Weird'and i came across your review. You studied in the University of Dundee?I found the spirit of the place fantastic while I was reading it. Would you say it was comparable to real life? Somehow I had this impression that it was always raining there :)

Hi, capira. I'm not sure if you've checked in with the Canada group recently or not, but in the Vote for Our Group Read thread, we are trying to find out if anyone is interested in joining us for a group read of The Halifax Connection. I'm posting a note to you specifically because you voted for it a while back, so I was wondering if you are still interested, in maybe reading it this month? Pop over there and let us know if you'd like to. Thanks!

Hi! I’m from the Canada group, just popping by to let you know that we are trying to drum up interest in doing a group read. We have a thread started for anyone who is interested to let us know they are interested. Once we know there will be a few people, we’ll then decide on a book (Canadian author, of course!). Hope you decide to join us!

Hi Capira. I'm just checking in to see how it goes with Villette. I honestly feel like the book is never going to end. I've only got about 120 pages left, but I'm going to have to force myself to read them.

Carolyn, Thank you so much for you note and support. I really appreciate it.
I am going to try to hang on to, at least, one Shelfari group [ Alexandria Forum].
I have made so many friends and cannot think what it would be like without them.
    Very best wishes, Jay

I forgot to add that I'm looking forward to finding out what you think of Through Black Spruce. I remember you posting about Three Day Road, and I'm curious to know which of the books you prefer. I've read both, too.

Ha Ha. I was telling one of my other Shelfari friends that reading Villette feels like a chore. I normally give up on books I'm not enjoying by about page 50 to 100, but I'm trying hard not to give up on this one. I'm halfway through now, and am starting to enjoy it a little - not much mind you, but I'm finding it easier going now. Still, I'd rather be reading something else.

My photo is of Caerphilly Castle in Wales. Have you been? It hasn't been restored to the same extent as some other castles I've visited, but given its sheer size it is impressive nevertheless.

Many thanks for your good wishes,
I am totally horrified at the thought of losing my driver's lic' as well as my other set-backs with this darn curse!. I had a rather unfortunate experience when I moved to Southern Ontario from the North 16 years ago. Obviosusly I had to find a new eye specialist and after six months got an oppointment. The original one did some laser surgey and I undertook a daily drop regime. This seemed to keep the problems at bay. This new fellow, however, decided that I not longer had glaucoma and took me off the drops!!! This was about 15 years ago. Last summer I started getting some bleariness so made another appointment. This time we discoved after three or four visits that my pressures were peaking..Not a good thing for the optic nerve. I am now back on the drops. I have never been sure whether this was a case of malpractice or what?!
Anyway I am trying to do all I can to save my sight. My Dad became completely blind only six months after he retired. He has an avid reader and wonderful watercoulourist. He was devastated and gave up his zest for living. My Mum was blind for eight years before she passed away at 97. She was too stubborn to give up living or indeed her life. She left the nursing home in England following her second broken hip as cranky as ever, but full of vim and vigour.! All bang...no whimper from her..:)
Thanks agian for your kind thoughts. Jay

I am hardly even a lurker these days. I seldom come on here--just don't have the time, really. I do use shelfari to keep my wish list organized though! I came across Black Britain at, of all places, the Imperial War Museum in London. They had a small but interesting exhibition on West Indians in WWI and WWII and their post-war settlement in England. The book was in the bookshop but too heavy to lug in a suitcase, so I just ordered it on amazon!
As for our athletes. What can I say? It is exhilirating and overwhelming and amazing! I am thinking I should quit my job and write the book about how we are such a running superpower...
And I finally read Beyond a Boundary! Did I tell you...?

    Dear Capira,

I’ve missed your participation at Anglophiles Anonymous. I hope it wasn’t something Mrs. Danvers said. Please do drop in – we’re attempting to determine our Top Ten Favourite British Novels, amongst other vital matters. And feel free to start your own discussion threads if none catch your fancy.

    Yours faithfully,

    Tinky

I got my copy of Beyond a Boundary from Amazon only to discover that there are shelves-full at the university bookshop where I work! I will be reading it for my "real life" bookclub next month. We are reading The Good Negress for this month -- we meet on Wednesday -- I'm almost finished, but I'm not exactly loving it.

Wonderful idea to trace David Thompson's route on maps! I picked Epic Wanderer for the local history aspect and also an interest in map making and was surprised to learn what an interesting life he lead. What was your interest in reading this book?

Hi Capira, You have a very interesting shelf. You have one of my all time favorites – Rebecca! Also read the review on Bharthi Mukherjee’s book and am surprised that I haven’t heard about her as yet… Am going to pick up a copy to read…

    Hello.. :)
So have you found anything interesting on my shelf? I've just joined safari so that's why my shelf looks rather poor. Plus I can't add many of the Polish books I've read, since they are not in the catalogue. :)
And what happened to the shelf layout anyway? It used to show the books we share first and now I have to go look for them all over your shelf. And what do those numbers mean? Any idea?
