There's something symbolic about it for sure. I'll reread Ghosts someday and will try to see if there's something else that foreshadowed its climactic end. I kind of like the way there's ambiguity to the whole thing.

Yeah, it builds on the stereotype of ghosts and then gives more details about them that still defamiliarizes their presence. For example, the wine-chilling thing that you pointed out. That was really funny.

The setting (a newly built condo) and the time (new year's eve) are quite significant. The lack of closure at the end seems to terminate everything, indicating that what happens afterward is the stuff of a new novel. It's a brand-new year and people have to start from scratch again. The terms "ghosts of the past" acquires new meaning in this light.

I like how the presence of ghosts is not justified. I agree with you that their connection to the living is central to the story. It's also quite significant that they are all male and naked and Patri was a young woman. Their seduction of her may be part of the process of Patri's sexual awakening, so in a way her death is the death of innocence.

So the plays were adaptations then. I initially thought they were original. I've no background on the Noh, but it still interests me. Thanks for the info.

cactusbeetroot, are Mishima's No plays really good? your high rating makes me want to buy this. I've been eyeing it, but I'm not sure if he excels in drama as in short stories ...

Thanks for your reply to my question about The Road.

I see you have read Sunset Limited by McCarthy. I just started The Orchard Keeper last night, and it is my first read by him, and I really like it. It took a while for me to get into his writing style, but once I did, I am hooked.
