  • The Laurentine Spy

    The Laurentine Spy

    by Emily Gee
    • Rated 5 stars

I think Emily Gee has just ensured a place on my favorite author's list. I love her works -- it's a pity she has so few out. In any case, the plot of The Laurentine Spy was a wonderful and engaging idea. It was a good mix of suspense, action, romance, and realism. Intriguing characters that I fell in love with. A richly described and interesting world. I couldn't put this book down! And I wish there had been more.

The concept behind this book was very unique and intriguing. I loved the post-apocalyptic world, its inhabitants, and even the twisting plot. But there was just so much sex in it that it pretty much overpowered everything else. It felt a little like reading porn... I thought the story would've been stronger without all the digressions.

When I read the description of this book, I had such high hopes. The plot idea is wonderful and Eva Ibbotson could've done so much with it! Unfortunately, I found the romance boring and the writing extremely bland. I tried, but I just can't get into her style of writing.

The beginning reminded me Twilight, but it ended up being much, much better. Alyson Noel had me fooled, but I'm so glad she didn't take the traditional route. My only quip is that the later parts of the book could have been slightly less confusing. Overall, however, I loved the read and I couldn't put it down!

This was a nice, quick paranormal YA read. It was easy to get into the plot, which was interesting and had some very unique elements. I liked that Harrison reversed the usual conventions of light vs. dark -- gave it a nice twist.

    Storm Glass

    by Maria V. Snyder
    • Rated 4 stars

I love Maria Snyder and I love her books... but I found an annoying amount of typos and grammatical errors in this book. It just seems so careless, no?

That aside, Storm Glass does live up to the standards set by the Study series. The plot is sufficiently mysterious and captivating and I look forward to its continuation in Sea Glass.

This was a wonderfully epic historical novel. Well-developed characters and a complex, intriguing plot. I had the ending ruined for me prior to reading the book, but I was still gripping the edge of my seat in anticipation for Donnelly's each successive move.

I'm a sucker for riddles. Not to mention, this book has great characters and lovely twists to keep you from putting it down. It reminded me a lot of Libba Bray's A Great and Terrible Beauty trilogy but, obviously, with its own highlights. Overall, a great read. I can't wait for the next installment.

To be honest, I didn't really get it. I thought it was a good story -- though the language made things confusing for me at times -- but it wasn't a good ghost story.

Now I know why this book is so famous. One of those rare classics that I genuinely enjoyed. Sat on the ground in the bookstore and read it all in one sitting. :)
