“I am a female mountaineer and, at times, feel that the feminism that could be practiced in my sport is lost and a false uber-macho attitude takes over. This book really helped me sort out my political feelings towards mountaineering.
Enough about how it changed my life.
This book is a thoughtful compilation of the first-hand accounts of early female mountaineers - sad that the oldest account was in the late 1800s. The candor of these women as they accomplish what, in many cases, was societally reprehensible and placed them on the margins of normalcy is heartening. They oscillate between pride, meekness, and the expression of the pioneer spirit that is at the heart of the sport. I only deducted a star because I wish it were longer and dealt with the aspect of indigenous female mountaineers.
If you're a feminist, an expeditionist, a mountaineer, an historian, or a writer you should pick this book up. ”
