Kundera uses his usual media (love, sex, loss) to get at his usual, existential points but does so much more effectively than in the other books of his I've read. It is tough to explain or review a philosophical piece so I'll just say that if you like Kundera, you'll like this book.

After finishing this book I find myself thinking back often on the scene near the end where the past an present collide and are disinterested in one another for different reasons. We all have something to learn from the past, young people, awkward situations. The book passed at a clipped pace, leaving me behind in its venereal dust.

Luscious, disturbing, and indulgent. One of my favorite novels ever. Although, many different interpretations might reject the book as pedophilia.

  • Packaging Girlhood: Rescuing Our Daughters from Marketers' Schemes
    • Rated 3 stars

Written by two developmental psychologists from the (predominantly) white, middle-class Northeast. Despite their best attempts to address the issues of diverse girls, the book is geared towards middle- and upper-middle-class girls and the cultural pressures they face when shaping their girlhood. Not eloquently written, but it certainly does make one think about gender issues in our society and has made me more conscious of the influence of marketing. Overall, it brings up some interesting points for a fairly limited audience.

Interesting (but not at all new) concept. It gets a two because - I. Hate. Business. Jargon.

  • A Life on the Edge: Memoirs of Everest and Beyond

Humbly-written account of Jim Whittaker's exceptional adventures - both in the hills and out.

Dense and analytical. Entranced me from beginning to end. This was actually assigned reading in a Cultural Anthropology course a while back.

Participant observation doesn't get much better than this.

Journalism as it should be practiced. If you're an environmentalist, this book will rile you up and make you fact-check and obsessively research the subject for months. If you don't care about nature, I hope it does the same.

Although the first paragraph is the best, the rest of the novel is alright, too. It drags on a bit and some of the relationships seem unrealistic, contrived, unbelievable, and artificial. [br/][br/]On the positive side, this is a nice book to read on an airplane or any other time that the brain is deprived of oxygen and needs something easy to digest. At turns, witty, well-written, and materialistic.
