“Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body,” said by Joseph Addison. If this is true than I am constantly exercising my mind and intriguingly get in more trouble for it than my brother for playing video games. Maybe it is for what I read? I tend to read mainly Paranormal Romance or Fantasy. Anything with Vampires, Werewolves, Witches, etc. almost always has the power to keep me entertained. I just get no respect for it. My parents and their friends constantly look on my reading habits as worse than watching reality TV and are always harping on me for being antisocial. *sigh* Oh well.
I have to say that I am a little neurotic about reading. I started a book diary, which expanded into a multi-page excel sheet. There is the page for my book diary where I note the date I started reading the book, the title and author and of course my thoughts. There is a page for what books I’m planning to read next. The next page is for upcoming book releases which I generally keep track of through Amazon. Then there is a page for books and series that I think sound cool and I might try reading sometime. Lastly there is a page for my favorite authors and the series they write. I did say neurotic right?
I also love to write and recently joined a writing class which has the power to excite and freak me out. There is something about letting others read and more importantly critique my work that gets my heart racing every time. I read something from a book in the class recently that I really liked. It’s from a book called “The Art of Fiction” by John Gardner. He talks about something called the Fictional Dream, which is a kind of trance. It’s when people read and they forget they’re reading and they see the thing in front of them as though it’s actually happening. I love it when that happens to me and I hope that one day through my writing I can create that for someone else.
Other than reading and writing I like listening to music (Muse, Evanescence, Paramore, Lincoln Park, Kings of Leon, and Within Temptation are some of my favorites.) I like watching movies but generally only see Paranormal or Action in the theaters (it’s just too damn expensive.) I like to play soccer and joined co-ed team last year. I love my family and on occasion hanging out with them can be a good time. I’m also in classes to become a certified dog trainer and hope to someday train service dogs. Now to leave you with a few more quotes on reading:
Learn as much by writing as by reading.
~ Lord Acton ~
All the best stories in the world are but one story in reality -- the story of escape.
It is the only thing which interests us all and at all times, how to escape.
~ Arthur Christopher Benson ~
I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.
Jorge Luis Borges
The best effect of any book is that it excites the reader to self activity.
~ Thomas Carlyle ~
