  • Finding Square Holes: Discover Who You Really Are and Find the Perfect Career
    • Rated 4 stars

I like the author's unconventional approach and her down-to-earth but straight-to-the heart points. 16 April 08: I'm re-reading this book, to cover the chapters that I skipped last time.

  • Songs of the Humpback Whale: A Novel in Five Voices

A very engaging and remarkable story. The plot is written in jumbled order; some flashbacks, then fast forward, and next is different perspective from different characters. In a way, it builds up the suspense and increases my curiosity.

This is only my 2nd read of Jodi Picoult's works, but I'm falling in love with her style and flair in writing already.

    Very satisfying, worth reading.

I just remember that I once read this book, owned by a friend. Duh! It's boring! boring! boring! A case of too many repetition of phrases. I feel like as if the author kinda trying so hard to convey his message but failed! I wonder how in the world did this book become a bestseller. Definitely owing to its catchy title, but it's contents are actually so...(shall I say) porous?! (Sigh) If you are calculating in your mind to buy this book, my piece of advice: DON'T!

  • The Five People You Meet in Heaven
    • Rated 3 stars

From my perspective as a Muslim, this story describes heaven far different from Islam teachings. So, I took a different point of view instead. Basically, the gist is about how our path criss cross with other people in our life, either the person is somebody we've met only once, or someone we've never met but has something to do with what's happened in our life, be it our career, friendship, love, marriage etc. There's one particular quote that I like, which says: "hatred is a curved blade", meaning that when we direct it to other person, we are hurting ourselves, too.

  • The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Other Stories (The Penguin English Library)
    • Rated 4 stars

I read this a very long time ago. It was during my transition of reading light 'n easy books to tougher ones. It was quite a slow read at first, but as I was catching up the story, my reading speedometer began to escalate. Not my favourite, but definitely a must-read book.

  • Vanishing Acts: A Novel
    • Rated 4 stars

It is an engaging novel, the plot flows smoothly. (And yes, there were certain details that I skipped because I thought they were a bit too much, or rather failed to hold my interest). Each chapter is told from a different point of view of 4 main characters; Delia Hopkins, her father Andrew Hopkins, her fiance Eric and her best friend Fitz.

Delia had been kidnapped by her own father when she was 4 years old. Her parents then were going through a divorce, her mom was an alcoholic, which was why her father took her away.

Delia has no recollection of that experience until one day a policeman turned up at her doorstep and arrested Andrew.

Eric, a law practitioner, naturally became Andrew's defense lawyer, which actually complicated things even more. Fitz, on the other hand, had been tasked to cover up the story of the Andrew (Fits was a journalist).

The rest is for you to find out ..

  • A Guilty Thing Surprised

    A Guilty Thing Surprised

    by Ruth Rendell
    • Rated 5 stars

A mystery novel, of extra-marital affair and incest.

A woman fell in love with a man, whom she initially had no knowledge that he was her long-lost brother. They were separated when they were little.

Later she married a quite wealthy man, and supposedly settled down and lived happily ever after. Yet she just couldn't let go of her first love, although she knew that it was terribly wrong to be in love with her own sibling. They both (the lady and her brother) continued their love affair, even though her brother then married another woman, whom is plain looking. Then when the lady was murdered, the mystery of her death and their secret love affair unravelled.

Unpredictable, smooth-flowing plot, quite equal to Agatha Christie's (to my standard). Good read.

  • The Patient
    • Rated 5 stars

Not bad at all! I gave it five star as (1) I don't know which other book I should compare it with, and (2) The plot flows smoothly, plus no unnecessary sexual scenes involved.

This is the first novel by Michael Palmer that I read. Got it long time ago from Payless Books. Suddenly it came across my mind after reading Jiwa Rasa's entry on medical-based fiction written by medical practitioners. Worth reading and worth keeping.
