Are books still relevant in our Sky+/iPod/techno/gadget society? Well I certainly think so, and recent studies agree. It seems there has been an upsurge in the popularity of books recently. Some of this is due to the Harry Potter effect and the Dan Brown effect, but it's also due to the popularity of good books too :-)

But if those particular series are introducing more people to more books, then they have their place. I've been an avid book reader for longer than I can remember. Back in primary school days I seem to remember getting through a book a day, and had (and still have in a dusty box in a loft somewhere) those childhood classics The Famous Five and The Secret Seven.

For many years my book reading dwindled, but over the last few years I've been working my way through the fiction section of a nearby library, and am devouring books at a rate of knots once more.

I'm also a part time reviewer, reviewing books, CDs, DVDs and anything else besides.

Any recommendations would be welcome, I've been nosing around people's shelves looking for ideas about what to read next... « less
