Hey Shelfarians!

Are books still relevant in our Sky+/iPod/techno/gadget society? Well I certainly think so, and recent studies agree. It seems there has been an upsurge in the popularity of books recently. Some of this is due to the Harry Potter effect and the Dan Brown effect, but it's also due to the popularity of good books too... more »

Hi there friend! I haven't been on Shelfari much myself lately, trying to get back to online living a bit more, actually started a facebook account today, like I need yet another distraction from reading! haha. My reading list sadly did not get very large this year as I took a 3 month road trip across America and didn't get much reading in. I did cure my addiction to T.V. though so hopefully will find more time for my beloved books. Am reading the new Dan Brown right now and am really enjoying it.
75th book, I am green with envy!! What ones really stuck out for you? I hope you are well!

Hi! I see we have a number of James Patterson books in common. :-) What other books in the similar genre do you recommend? Thanks!

It surely is, I'm on FB constantly now, but still find time to watch EE and read! Glad you are fine.

Did I answer your last post? I can't remember, sadly, I think I'm losing it. I'm ok, how are you doing? Busy watching EE? Still reading a lot, although I seem to spend way too much time on the games in Facebook. I must be having my second childhood, I hadn't played a game since the first one.

Well, hello back! How nice to see you again!

I think many for us, life on shelfari comes in spurts, so I underdstand you're not being here a lot lately. Good for you enjoying life! I have read some great books recently. They were: Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins; Homeland by Barbara Hambly; Plain Song by Kent Haruff. I remember you like thrillers, & none of these are like that, so I'm not sure you'd be interested in them. What have you found good?

Many congrats on reading 75 books this year! I'm up to 50, so far. Perhaps I can catch up to you before the year is out...=D

Yes, all my bookshelves are full. We generally resort to borrowing from the library for most reading material these days, but if I had even a dollar for every book I own, I'd be a lot better off financially than I am. (Of course, I could say the same for CDs and DVDs, but who's counting? Good music and movies are also important to me.)

I completely agree. Reading is a very important part of life, and I am serious about promoting literacy at every opportunity.

They also have these small motor home places you can walk up to and order Mexican food that is to die for I swear...home made masa, tortillas and tacos...just really good down to earth food

I'm not sure how many books I've read this year because my list is on my computer at home, but I know I passed the 50 marker and I'm probably in the 60's or 70's right now. This year I've read a lot of young adult and children's books. Mostly ones that have received a lot of acclaim or are really popular so I know what some of the patrons I see from time to time are reading.

I finally read Patterson's Step on a Crack and really enjoyed it. I also read the follow up, Run for Your Life and really liked that one as well. I'm hoping that series will continue to be up to par with some of his earlier novels.

Some other suspense/thrillers that I've read this year and really enjoyed are:

Sweetheart, the follow up to Chelsea Cain's Heartsick.
The Good Guy by Dean Koontz
    The Husband by Dean Koontz

I had never read anything by Koontz before and I really liked both of them, but I've heard from a lot of Shelfarians that his later books aren't as good as his earlier works, but I'm willing to keep reading more.

Have you read anything lately that really stands out as a great novel or enjoyable read?

I suppose it's just one more step up the information ladder. I haven't invested in a reader yet, though I admit the prospect of carrying an entire library of books around in one neat compact little device is very attractive. I love to read so much I find I have to limit myself or that's all I ever do. With a mobile reader, the discipline to stop reading would be even harder! Then again, I can see that very fact being a good thing with our youth. They need to learn to read, and the easier we can make it for them to do just that, the better!

Hello. I understand about life being too busy. Unfortunately, reading has been something that has suffered because of that. I'm only on my 24th book this year. It's sad. Oh well. Anyway, I recently read Catching Fire, the sequel to The Hunger Games. I definitely recommend it!

Yes, they say the next 18 months will see eBooks really come into their own. If that's true, it may very well be the first time in my life I've been in the right place at the right time! WOW!

And I agree, it is an interesting experience to read something most of the rest of the world hasn't. Sort of gives one a personal glimpse into the heart of the author.

    Hello Stranger!
I noticed that you haven't been active for a while... you've been missed!

I'm actually in a bit of a reading lull at the moment... I hope to snap out of it and find a great book soon. Although recently, I was lucky enough to read several books in a row that I loved enough to rate 4 or 5 stars... then I had to go and try "Twilight" and spoil it all... haha... I didn't like it much, and the 2nd in the series was even worse... I honestly can not see what all the fuss is about, how did it ever become that popular. Now I have started reading a John Grisham which looks promising.

75 books already! I'm jealous... what have been your best and worst reads lately?

    Take care,
    Jo

Thanks. We're starting out with eBooks only and moving into print as soon as possible, so the only huge outlay right now is time. It's interesting though, and I have always loved reading (and writing). Maybe someday soon I can write some more!
