This is a very inspirational book!

I was captivated by the description of life in a Communist country. It is well written and easy to read. Although it's several decades old, it's still very relevant.

There is a reason this is a classic. The writing is excellent and the story is captivating. I loved it.

Although it took me a while to finish, I enjoyed this book. The writing is simple but the content is deep. I recommend it to anyone who is married.

I went into this book expecting to love it. Sadly, I was disappointed.

I had a hard time with so many things - the writing style was contrived, the continual references to old movies and actors was annoying, I didn't connect with any of the characters, and I was frustrated with Cornelia's complete lack of moral integrity. True, she loved Clare. But I CANNOT get past the fact [SPOILER ALERT] that she hooked up with her sister's husband. Seriously?! And her counsel to Clare about sex is beyond ridiculous.

I finished this book, but getting through the last third was a struggle for me.

This book is beautiful. It is a fascinating story that captured me from the start. The writing is smart. The characters are well developed. The premise is creative. It is equally funny, heartwarming and sad.

Altogether a fantastic work of fiction.

I enjoyed this book. I had a hard time with it at first because the writing style is rather simplistic, but about halfway through, I got engrossed in the story to the point where I didn't want to put the book down.

Tom Davis writes with an obvious agenda, but it's one I believe strongly in (orphans in poverty) so it doesn't bother me.

Some of his descriptions of poverty kept me up at night. Literally.

This book was a quick and easy read. The print is large and the book is thin. However, the content seemed lacking.

She had some good observations about cultural differences, but it seemed a stretch to try to fill a book with such little content.

It was obvious she reformatted a talk to fit a book, but for me it didn't work.

  • Same Kind of Different as Me: A Modern-Day Slave, an International Art Dealer, and the Unlikely Woman Who Bound Them Together
    • Rated 5 stars

This is one of the best books I've ever read. It's a beautiful story of love, heartbreak, courage, pain, strength and ultimately redemption ... basically a story of God.

It was difficult to read in parts because it made me confront some of my deepest fears. But it's also very convicting and inspirational.

I just read on the web site that a screen play is being developed by the producer who did The Pursuit of Happyness. I can't wait!

I LOVED this book. Which was a total surprise. The first one was okay, and I thought I'd feel the same way about this one. And for most of it I did. However, once I got to Chapter 22, everything changed. I was hooked.

Chapter 22 is right after Jesus is baptized when he's tempted in the desert. Here, Rice imagines what the confrontation between Satan and Jesus might have been like. And it's powerful. Once I started connecting her story with the Gospels, her book took on a whole new meaning. I realize it's fiction, but her story helped flesh out things that I've always had a hard time imagining. Her story made them real.

The rest of the book goes through all the events following Christ's temptation - his miracles and conversations. But she gives a whole new perspective on things I've read in the Bible a million times.

I gave this book five stars because for me, it was worth reading the whole thing just for the final chapters.

  • The Time Traveler's Wife
    • Rated 4 stars

If I could have rated this book with 3.5 stars, I would have. I mostly enjoyed this book.

The concept is interesting and it's well-written. I did find it rather confusing with all the time travel, although I suppose that's the point. There were a couple parts that I thought were unnecessary. The gratuitous sexual details did nothing to enhance the story and in fact detracted from the the point the author was trying to make.

For me, this kind of thing tends to overshadow the rest of the book.
