Check me out at raforall.blogspot.com. I am a Readers' Advisory librarian in Cook County, IL. I help public library users age 16 and up to find books to read for fun. I just saw your review for WILLY at the Readers Advisory Guide site. That was very kind of you. Thank you.

    Hi Becky
I'm interested in being a friend. It seems you are somewhat like me, trying to cover many genres. I mostly do book reviews and freelance editing. I live in northern B.C. and am a member of Friends of the Library in the town of Smithers. My only connection with university is that it took me 30 years to get there, and then I was working as a division assistant for 20+ professors. I thought the Faculty of Commerce would be dull, but it turned out that they were all crazy in the nicest way and I loved working there until I retired.

Becky you have the perfect job...
Thanks for your review on Firmin by Sam Savage, I was feeling puzzled because everyone else seemed to find it a great book, but I couldn't enjoy it - though I should have. You seemed to have read my mind :)

I love your blog--it's one of the "must reads" in my Google Reader. I've gotten a lot of great book suggestions and websites from it. Thanks!!

I am starting to feel like myself. I get tired very (very) easily, but I want to get into the outside world again. I'm thinking about coming back to work for a couple of hours a week from Saturday. In a few weeks, I'd like to have the usual old RA people over for wine and ...... I've missed everybody a lot!

By the way, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie got me through my first few days home from the hospital. I was absolutely taken with Flavia de Luce; I thought the plot had a few rough spots, but Flavia redeemed it all.

Becky, I found this book strangely bloodless, even somewhat removed from the actual events. I've read other books by Diane Ackerman, loved The Natural History of the Senses and other ones, too, but this one just didn't move me. The events were horrific, but her telling of them just seemed one step away from actuality. Strange.

Hi Becky - I just wanted to drop by and say that as a former student of your RA class I read books differently now and take more time to consider the "appeal" of each novel. Thank you for an enlightening and informative class!

Your review of Await Your Reply was spot on. I loved this book, too. What you said about the sense of dread permeating the book after the first pages and waiting to find out what happened was true for me. During the first two parts, I kept trying to figure out how these stories would intertwine.

What an amazing writer Chaon is.

I don't remember what book you're talking about. Whatever it was has completely fallen out of my head. I hope you like whatever it is!

Becky, have you read The Help by Kathryn Stockett? I think you'd really like it. Told from three points of view, it's the story of white women in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960s and their relationships with their black maids. Give it a try.
