One Book that Changed my Life:
It would have to be "Down These Mean Streets" by Piri Thomas. Here he was an Afro Latino like me and at the age of 14 I had no idea what that was. It really helped open me up to my identity. It help me come to the conclusion of why I was treated differently by my peers and people of other ethnic groups.
One Book I've Read More than Once:
So many. Where should I start? I would have to say that I have reread The Autobiography of Malcolm X about 6 or 7 times. I have read Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States" about twice but I continue to read entire chapters of that book and I always go back to reference it. I have read Mestre Acordeon's "Capoeira" over and over. I also go back to read entire chapters of that.
One Book You are Currently Reading:
I read several books at a time... I am reading Gerard Taylor's "Capoeira: From Luanda to Cyberspace Vol I" and "Memoirs of a Militia Seargant" by Manuel de Almeida. I just started Harold Cruse's "The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual"
One Book I Want on the Desert:
"The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho. Mythology, adventure, and finding one's purpose all wrapped in one.
One Book that Made me Laugh:
"Graceland" by Chris Abani and "Drown" by Junot Diaz
One Book that Made me Cry:
"Back in the Day" by Jamel Shabazz. The pics just bring back memories of a time before crack when brothers shot the ones instead of the guns (thanks to Hasaan Salaam for that quote). "Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe. This book is a clear demonstration of how good things come to an end. "In the Time of the Butterfly" by Maria Alvarez. Based on a true story and even though you know how the story ends, you pray it does not end that way.
One Book You Wish You Never Read:
"Children of Men" by PD James. I always say that movie adaptations are never better than the book. I can safely say that the movie will be 100 times better than this book.
One Book You've Been Meaning to Read:
"Pursuit of Happyness" Gunnar has been telling me to read this for over a year. now it's a movie. i am so late.
