I've been reading ever since middle school. I remember one of the first series I ever truly got into was the Abhorsen Trilogy (also known as the Old Kingdom Trilogy), which ultimately got me hooked on reading. I'm one of those readers that HAS to buy a book to read it. I just love the thrill of picking up a new book, even if I'm not entirely... more »

1920s theme surrounding occult detective work? Hot damn! This book is amazingly fun and quirky. It manages to keep your attention my focusing an a myriad of different topics, from the spooky demonic killings, to the life of various teenagers dealing with their odd abilities that turn their lives upside down. The book does have its downfalls, though. Mostly being that it has a few pacing issues towards the middle onward. Otherwise I'd say this is one of my favorite books in a while.

Interesting concepts, but the reading level was a little too low for me. I understand that it's suppose to be a children's novel, but I guess I expected more from Nix. I'm sure younger readers will enjoy this.

I was surprised at how quickly this book drew me in. Of course, Garth Nix's writing is always grand, but the subject matter is something I'm not usually that keen on. However, the world described and the events taking place astounded me! I found myself looking for more after the book was done. The ending was... a little lack luster, almost as if Nix had some limitations put on him, but over all it was still a really great book.

Definitely not as good as the first book. I was hoping for more time set in the arena, but it ended up just being random events after the first Hunger Games. I'm still interested enough to read the last book, but I'm hoping it'll get better.

  • Guillermo Del Toro: Don't Be Afraid of the Dark: Blackwood's Guide to Dangerous Fairies

It's a bit expensive, but well worth it in the end. It's an interesting intro to the movie, as well as a pretty nice guide some of the more well known dangerous faeries.

Nancy Farmer keeps surprising me with these amazing books she writes. I was not expecting to like House of the Scorpion in the slightest. But, her writing style frequently captures me interest, despite character archetypes that I /normally/ wouldn't care about. In any case, House of the Scorpion is a great read that flows really well. The characters and interactions are captivating and will have you wondering what the hell will happen next.

Not a bad ending to the series, but Bertie's choice in her little love triangle wasn't really much of a choice, was it? It was more of an... "Well, I can't choose that guy, so I guess I'll have to go with you!" In any case, it was still a pretty decent series.

Not anywhere near as good as I thought it would be. The main characters are pretty much indistinguishable as far as speech, the chapters are usually only about 2 pages long and I just had a hard time actually getting in to it. I liked the idea... the execution wasn't that great, though. Perhaps this is intended for much younger readers?

  • Little Women and Werewolves

This book was a little conflicting to me. The concept of throwing werewolves into an old classic like little women sounded like a great idea, and from what they did wasn't too bad, but it was only barely added in. For the most part you could forget that werewolves were even suppose to be part of the story. The main story is still about these young girls growing up into adulthood.

This was another book that I became interested in after seeing the movie. While the book and the movie are completely different, I think they're both worth looking into. The book goes deeper into the relations and personalities of each person effected by Susie's murder. The movie has amazing symbolism and representation for the "in between".
