Julie Arduini: The Surrendered Scribe

I'm a writer and public speaker residing in NE Ohio with my husband and two children. My heart is to encourage others to find freedom through surrender. I know that has to start with me so I'm surrendering the good, the bad, and maybe one day, the chocolate.

I'm an avid reader and review books on my blog. Check everything out at my... more »

  • Getting Into Character: Seven Secrets a Novelist Can Learn From Actors
    • Rated 5 stars

This isn't a new book, but it's a treasure for writers just the same. This gives seven secrets that you can learn through acting. Included were examples from classics. I learned a lot from it and highly recommend it!

I am a fan of Brunstetter but I think with Cindy Woodsmall on the scene the bar for Amish fiction has been set higher, and this book just didn't meet it for me. I'm looking for something fresh and fast paced and I only finished this book and the first because I invested so much time in it I thought perhaps the mystery would be revealed. There are good back stories but they don't seem fresh to me. This is a good book but again, I think Cindy Woodsmall's writing set the bar higher.

At first glance this looks like a superficial friend makeover with romance book but it's so much more than that. The friends are mismatched and walking on egg shells around each other because of faith issues. The romance is rich with forgiveness, trust, infertility, redemption and healing woven throughout. I loved that this book covered premature ovary failure (POF). I never saw that investigated before. I also appreciated character issues like adultery, miscarriage, leaving homosexuality and the consequences of them. I was rooting for Kate and Clive---this was a moving read. Will Maia's story be forthcoming?

The was a fun but serious take on salvation and forgiveness through the eyes of romance writers. I absolutely loved the way Tamara Leigh handled the discussion questions at the end, what a way to mix things up. This book is much more than a catty look at the publishing world and it's definitely worth a read.

  • Generation NeXt Marriage: The Couple's Guide to Keeping It Together
    • Rated 5 stars

I'll be blogging about this March 24, 2008 at http://thesurrenderedscribe.blogspot.com/but I have to say this book is so revealing. It uses lyrics from songs I grew up with to show the thought process of my age group and our choices. This is full of statistics, Biblical example and encouragement and raw, fresh sharing from the author. If you are a Gen X'er this book should not be a wish, it should be a must.

I thought at first I could never relate to this book. I've never been to California, I'm so bad with hair I can't even cut bangs. As I got further into the book I realized anyone can relate because we all struggle with belonging, especially if our childhood was less than perfect. The main character wants so much but feels she is a have not. I enjoyed watching the true definition of have versus have not come through. I thought the portrayal of an alcoholic parent was well written. The book has humorous points throughout but isn't cutesy as sometimes chick lit can be. It's a look at real life and how fake it really is. It is definitely worth a read.

This book had my attention from beginning to end. It was impossible to not root for these characters because Raney wrote them so well. It was an emotional journey for them, and me!

I really enjoyed this book. I thought it gave a great glimpse into many things--Asian culture, single life, twenty something pressures. More than that, I was really moved by the reason behind Lexi's trust issues. That part was very well done, but the overall book was one of my favorite chick lit reads of 2007. I can't wait to get my hands on the next one!

This was such a hard topic to tackle and read, but the storytelling is masterful.

  • One Step Over the Border: A Novel
    • Rated 4 stars

This will be one of the books we plan to review with the Christian Writers Forum Missing Pages book club. Personally I loved the Horse Dream Series by Stephen Bly so much I feel guilty loving anything as much as that, but this book is good. I am absolutely in love with westerns because of the way Bly writes them. The characters, and this is a term you can use loosely for this book, are fun, vivid and engaging. I encourage you to pick this one up, but also get the Horse Dream Series too!
