“I read this book because it came highly recommended by so many people I knew, and after reading it, I'm not sure why they recommended it. I guess it's a solid story and a good premise for a main idea, but the book was a drag (IMHO). It took so long to get started and the character development was like bicycling through quicksand. (Hard work, and ultimately, I'd rather just let the sand and darkness claim me than press on.) The book had no burning emotion, no passion. I don't ask for a lot, but everything was on a surface or near-surface level, and there was no room for interpretation or inference. Well...maybe inference, but by the time anything was going to happen, I couldn't have cared less about what it was. Whether the characters solved the mystery or were all brutally murdered, I had so little invested that it mattered not. I'm not one who needs to be enthralled by the end of the first page, or even chapter, but at some point, you do have to pique my interest. That's a challenge, Stieg.”
