I am a curriculum developer, educator, filmmaker and writer. Books I enjoy usually have something to do with... more »

What did you think about Basic Black? I have a friend who's older kids could use some hometraining. (lol) I'm a close "aunty" to her youngest so she's getting it. Is this a book for 18 year olds?

Since you've read "Our Kind of People," you might enjoy "The Senator and the Socialite" by him as well. It plumbs this "talented tenth" group and shows the tragedy that happens when parents don't pass on the values of family and self-sufficiency to their children.

Thanks for the suggestions - all three are on my Amazon wish list and I'll see what I can get out of the library next time through. Too bad we have some First Amendment concerns here on Shelfari....at any rate, look forward to seeing what else you read! Best, Vanessa

Hi, Brainymama - I came to your shelf b/c was adding "tags" and have read Daughter of Han, as you have. Just wanted to drop you a note letting you know that I admire your shelf, and have already added Cane River, The Famished Road, and Dreaming in Cuban to my Amazon Wish List. If you have a second, I'd love your recommendation on what you think are the best (most up-to-date, readable, informative) 2-3 books on American slavery, particularly in the South.
I wish you the best! Happy Reading! - Vanessa

Hello dear member of the Black Feminist/Womanist Literature group! It's J., the admin., and I'm writing to inform you of the group's new look! (And it goes beyond the change in our group picture, though it is nice, don't you agree?) :) What we're discussing now: Patricia Hill Collins' Black Feminist Thought, Toni Morrison's Sula for our July read, our little BIG Read: 7 short stories in 7 days to begin later this month, the National Black Arts Festival where Alice Walker and Pearl Cleage are featured speakers, and more!

We'll soon have a group blog up and running, will begin profiling the uberly dynamic authors within our own group, discussing women's/girls action coalitions in your city, reviving some of our good ol' threads, etc.

I challenge everyone to invite at least one friend (already a member of shelfari or otherwise) to join the Black Feminist/Womanist Literature group and to log in at least bi-weekly. (Though weekly would be wonderful!) And I pledge to do the same.

And did you know that Toni Morrison's new novel, A Mercy, is due to be released in November? Ah, you would if you'd visited our group page! (No, actually, I haven't posted this information. lol) But do stop by and fall into the purple haze that is extraordinary literature by feminists of color!

    Love, Jaya

    Hey brainymama,
I remember when my children were young and I was immersed in children's literature. I used to review books for the School/Library Journal and Hornbook. At SLJ we used to meet in this book room at the Boston Public Library and literally go around to piles of books and pick out the ones we wanted to read.
I now have a granddaughter and have already stocked her shelf with a lot of books. One of my greatest pleasures was donating a lot of books with Black children's images to a school in S. Africa because they rarely get these sorts of books donated. I am at the point where I give away more than I buy and I'm at the library as much as I was when the chirren were young.
    Please become a friend.

Widow Traci Evans sits in on meetings with the lovely ladies of the Invincible Sisterhood because for a little while she can feel as if she belongs. The members are all sweet older women who have lost their husbands, but not their passion for life. However, unlike the other women in the Sisterhood, Traci's husband died while cheating on her.

Traci has no intention of letting a man make a fool of her again. Not even if he begged. Even her newfound friend and neighbor, Maureen Gilmore, can't convince her to open her heart to love again. But when Maureen's gorgeous son Ryan admits he's attracted to Traci, she might have to rethink everything she knows about love. Maureen has some soul searching to do as well. She's interested in a sexy young policeman...and then the unthinkable happens, she starts having hot flashes

Two women - two impossible situations.

NOT EVEN IF YOU BEGGED new release date Jan 22.
