Salsabrarian

I'm a youth librarian so most of my reading is children's and YA literature. My "Books I'm Reading" shelf features my current books, typically four titles at a time. It is usually two audiobooks (one for gym, one in car) and two hard copies (for breaks at work and on the nightstand).

The picture is of my library at home.

Hey, I just read "The Red Umbrella" by Christina Diaz Gonzalez, about Operation Pedro Pan. Have you seen/read it? I really enjoyed it.

I'd say "Looking for Alaska" and "Papertowns" might be more to your taste. I liked "Katherines." I liked the interplay between Hassan and Colin, but I do agree that the the musical was pretty overdone in "Will Grayson, Will Grayson." His books definitely play well with the "nerd" crowd, though.

Have you read any John Green? Namgyal is really enjoying his books (8th grade now,) though they mostly deal with seniors/just graduating. He really enjoys the "nerdfighters" aspect....you're gonna have to google it. Anyway, wondering if you've read or heard any buzz. Our small town librarian is totally a fan.

I read Shifty last week and it didn't work for me. I get the whole idea of it, that families can be made in a different fashion, but so much of it is overblown (the case worker, for example,) and I was horrified by the supervision...except for the obvious emergency at the end. I'd definitely hand a kid Sherman Alexie's "Flight" over this book!

Did you get What Shall I Make? What did you think? I thought it was awesome! I got Mixed- I liked his other book, but I don't think the boys care much. It would make a good one for the bathroom...you know, they'll pick it up because it's there, where it might be ignored on the shelf.

Have you seen "What Should I Make?" by Nandini Nayar? It's really cute- gentle and a nice cultural intro for little guys (and gals!) El Raton Perez is in- I pick it up tomorrow. Can't wait to see that one.

Yeah, I think the waiting room and the house call might be lost on the kids, but they keep us readers entertained. There's enough in the story that they love. Kunchok always has to comment that the teacher looks like she's going to throw up when the snake is doing her trick on the bars. And he loves the principal getting mad. We read Goodnight Goon a couple months ago. He enjoyed it. Didn't know about the sequel. Will watch.

I requested our library purchase, "Are You A Horse" and we got it this week. Have you seen "Doctor Ted"? Instant favorite, even with the big boys.
