Thanks for the invite! It would be interesting to see what the group has to say about Sebald. I have only read Austelitz by him and enjoyed it very much. One of the best books I've read lately. I'll look for some more. Suggestions?

Rise, I actually liked "The Angels Game" better than "Shadows in the Wind." Patrick Rothfuss' and Brent Weeks are my new hero's in the coming-of-age fantasy/adventure genre, both are fantastic! Happy New Year and READ ON...

Rise, while I'm not a fan of Bolano's I am definitely a huge fan of spanish writer Carlos Ruiz Zafon who wrote "Shadow of the Wind" and "The Angels Game."

Thanks for joining the Best English-Language Fiction of the Twentieth Century – the name rolls right off the tongue doesn’t it…
Hopefully the posts will start rolling in once we get over the ‘new group’ hump and out of the busy holiday season. Again, glad you joined up and I look forward to picking at the threads with you.
Please consider inviting your friends to join us as well. See you around the shelves.

I haven't read the English translations. However, when reading Los Detectives Salvajes, I noticed that Bolaño changed the grammar and the vocabulary as he moved from one Spanish-speaking country to another so that you felt you were actually there. I wondered how a translator could convey that feeling.

Yeah... I initially gave it 4 stars but I don't think it's fair. It's a good book, but there's something missing there that couldn't drag me completely into the story (which I guess is understandable given it's his first novel). Maybe it's just me being spoilt by having read TSD and 2666 before his other books... but then I also enjoyed Last Evenings on Earth a lot, and I felt much more involved with many of the short stories than with TSR.

    Sure,
I´ve read Putas Asesinas, Nocturno en Chile and 2666. I hope starting reading Detectives Salvajes in the next days.
I like very much the Bolano's style and narrative.
    Best regards
