    No offence taken -- books were, indeed, my own pass to personal freedom -- hence the Oprah quote. But for books, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I will need more than nine lives to read all the books I have and want and more! Quite an interesting collection you have there. Tintin, Wodehouse, Proust and Sophocles. Hmm… Not to mention Wilfred Owen. His poem “Futility” is so depressing, and oh so depressingly current.

    Thanks for the FYI on Littell. I haven't read The Company yet but I have something of a CIA fixation (long story) and I read somewhere that The Company is the definitive novel of the CIA.
