In the small Amish community of Hickory Hollow, Katie Lapp is planning to marry the widowed Bishop John Bieler and become stepmother to his five children. Her mother and father, Rebecca and Samuel, have four children - Katie is the youngest, and there are three older brothers: Eli, Elam and Benjamin. In the Amish community, women are submissive to their husbands, abiding by the laws and rules of the church. But Katie has often felt restricted by these rules, often thinking about pretty things. When she was 17 she was in love with a young man, Dan Fisher, who shared music with Katie and gave her the guitar she now loves. Sadly, Dan was a victim of a sailing accident when he was 19 but Katie still can't let go of her love for him, even though she is to marry another. As plans for the wedding continue, Katie finds a satin infant gown in the attic that changes her whole life and that of her family. Once she approaches her parents with her discovery, Katie makes a decision that affects everyone.

Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
  • Hickory Hollow: A small area, not found on a map, where Katie's Amish community lived. It has colorful names like Weaver's Creek, Hickory Lane.
  • Samuel and Rebecca Lapp's home: Built in 1840 by Samuel's ancestor and a brick mason friend, it was a sprawling house with an addition on the east side. The enormous kitchen held a large black metal stove (wood-burning) in the center, a sink. There was a utility room just inside the back door. The family ate at a long sawbuck table, covered in a green checkered oilcloth; a gas lamp hung over it. The stairs (a ladder) to the unheated attic led up from the living room, where daily prayers were said. A cold cellar was below the house, lined with rows of cabinets holding canned goods. Bedrooms were upstairs
  • Dawdi Haus: A connecting addition to the regular home, smaller, and built for Katie's grandparents, Mammi Essie and Dawdi David. It was sparsely furnished, with matching hickory rockers, a drop-leaf pine table and a tall pine corner cupboard, colorful rag rugs and no pictures, only an old calendar on the wall. An old deep purple and magenta crocheted afghan was on the sofa.
