As told through a sequence of dreams by the narrator, Christian leaves his family and embarks on a great adventure in search of the Celestial City. On his travels, Christian meets various characters, with almost every character name enlisting some attribute of man (Obstinate, Pliable, Evangelist, Worldly Wiseman, Shame, Ready-to-halt, Mr. Feeble-Mind, Mr. Great-heart, Mr. Valiant, etc.). Places take on the character of their names as well (Slough of Despond, Valley of Humiliation, Doubting Castle, etc.). Numerous citation references are made to bible passages. Out of loneliness for Christian, his wife Christiana and their four children (sometimes four sons, sometimes four daughters) trace his journey several years later in Part II. The family never meets Christian again (except perhaps in Bliss, where it is wondered whether they will recognize one another).
