I hated it !! Reason ?? Well...this book has the blatant racism I have ever read.
I was so angry that I threw the book across the wall..!
This book might be a classic..but for me it was the worst book I ever read.I wish I could give it minus points.

There are a lot of interesting characters in this book, but the two characters I find the most interesting are Mary and her mother, even though her mother is not a frequent character. Mary is a character that was physically forced to become someone she was not, due to someone else's choices. Not because of being abused, but because of being told she was a person who was rude, and so on, and hearing those words enough forced her into believing them. She is a character who I relate to play dough, because she was shaped into who she was by the hands of someone else. Her mother is the hand, her mother is the reason for the sudden change in character that occurred when she was younger. I think her mother must have experienced something similar to Mary, and that is what turned her into such a judgmental person. She must have been hurt very dearly before, because she hurt Mary purposely. It had to have been purposely because she knew what she was doing to such a young person. I find these two characters to be so similar, and that is why I think they are so distant- or at least they seem to be. Mary is the main character, her mother is not, however they are both the two most interesting characters in my opinion.

I think the theme of the book so far is the outcome of parenting decisions. In this specific example, the parenting that Mary had experienced with the time she had been with her parents, more specifically her mother, things that might not have been true. Her mother shows many examples of what bad parenting is, and then as you carry through the story you seem to realize that it truly affects her life entirely. Mary seems like the type of girl that may have been a sweet child. Her mother had thought that she was ugly, undisciplined, rude, and a list of other unfair terms, and she would constantly remind Mary of that. Hearing all those things from a young age, and being sent to live away from your mother in India, hurt Mary, al thought it did not hurt her in a depression way, it hurt her in a way that she was hurting herself without being aware of it. She was turning into the person that her mother described her to be. All in all, if the parenting involves unfair terms and repeated statements, it may affect the child long-term, and very severely.

I loved the thought a special hidden place to escape. The story vividly brought the garden to life for me, I could smell, hear and see the garden awaken as the story progressed.

This is a story about a young girl and her adventure and explorations through a secret garden (in her own backyard). This is a great book for grade levels 3rd through 5th. It has great vocabulary while evoking on the student's sense of imagination. I would use this story in the classroom focus on a specific time period and the style of writing, terminology, adventure paper with an activity.

This was a cute little read. For some reason I got it mixed up with the Little Princess, but this book was good too.
