Edith Wharton has exquisite talent, and after hearing about her more popular pieces, I looked at this book with regret. It was a simple story written in a style much more appropriate for the type of writing she was used to. The plot was interesting enough, but even my teacher confessed it was the worst of Wharton’s works.”
