“ Fourth Grader Roxie Warbler, a young girl with round, pink, sugar-bowl-handle ears, is teased unmercifully by Helvetia Hagus and her band of rag-tag Hooligans: Simon Surly, Freddy Filch, and Smoky Jo. They all attend Public School Number Thirty-Seven. Roxie does everything in her power to avoid the mean bullies. She and her friend Norman (who is also bullied by the Hooligans)get to school extra, extra early and leave extra, extra late to avoid them. But, Helvetia and her wicked crew catches up to them and in her attempt to escape their wrath, she falls into the school dumpster. A smelly problem, but an even bigger one looms when she finds out the the Hooligans are in the garbage container with her...and it is being hoisted up in the air and taken out to sea to be dumped! They swim, and swim, and swim, to a small deserted (so they think) island. Good thing for Roxie that her Uncle Dangerfoot taught her how to survive every dangerous adventure. As Roxie becomes the brains of the crew, they outwit every disaster on the island. Three cheers for Roxie and her 'don't panic' attitude!
A delightful story of resourcefulness, courage, and survival. The illustrations by Alexandra Boiger are endearing and add humorous visualization to the story”
“I loved it”

I personally loved this book because it seems like a book that children can really relate to. Children have problems with bullies everyday and I think this book will show them that they are not the only ones who are going through that problem. It could also be a learning book for children, so that they can feel more confident in themselves to stick up in situations like those. It can also be a book that can show those kids who are being the bullies that they may not be making decisions that are necessarily great decisions. I think what I liked the most about this book, and what children would like the most out of this book is Roxie's bravery and her confidence. She is someone that children can look up to for some many things. ”

Even though she has the hooligans after her, she, with the help of Lord Thistlebottom's book, finds ways to outsmart them. I love the way she turns them around by the end and they are all looking up to her for her bravery. The author did an excellent job with the characters. She made Roxie smart and very fun to be with. Who wouldn't want to go on an adventure with Roxie. The other charcaters were so appropriate for the story. Helvetia's Hooligans, were quite a wild bunch of children. Obviously the outlaws on the surface, but underneath, they didn't have nearly the bravery and know how as Roxie. The story reads very quickly. It begins with adventure and ends with adventure. Roxie is continually outwitting the Hooligans and the theives they encounter. This book is a must read book.”

She loved to listen to her Uncle Dangerfoot decribe how Lord Thistlebottom and him wrestled alligators and jumped from planes. The adventure began when Roxie and the Hooligans, which included Helvetica, Simon Surly, Freddy Flich, and Smoothy Jo ended up in a dump truck. From there they were dumped onto a garbage barge and dumped into the water where they had to swim to the deserted island. The island wasn't deserted, because two bank robbers, Snake Eyes and Rat, were hiding out there. The wonderful adventures began ith Helvetica and her hooligans hating Roxie, chasing her, and trying to hurt her. She had to sleep in a tree, which helped her discover that they were not alone on the island. She and the Hooligan's adventures were described in the book with Roxie always saving everyone by doing what Lord Thistlebottom's "Book of Pitfalls and How to Survive Them" recommended. Roxie always saved everyone by getting them water and food. Roxie discovered that here parents would miss her and that would be the best reason to go home. Roxie developed a sound to warn each other if the bank robbers were coming near them. Unfortunately, the bank robbers discovered their food and water was gone. Roxie saved the day by make a distress triangle with rocks on the beach. In the end, Roxie was saved by her Uncle Dangerfoot and Lord Thistlebottom raising her out of the water by helicopter. The robbers were captured in the end, and Roxie was a hero to the Hooligans. The theme was self-determination, survival, and to never give up. This book was an adventure from beginning to end, and was a pleasure to read. I would highly recommend it to my third through fifth grade students. ”
