Cast of Characters

  • Nour: Desert nomad who follows Ma el Ainine on the trek north in 1909. The main character of one the two storylines.
  • Lalla, aka Hawa ben Hawa: A young girl at the beginning of the book, living in a North African shantytown just called La Cite. She is the main character of the other storyline.
  • Ma el Ainine.: The leader of the movement to the North.
  • Aamma: Lalla's aunt, who raises her after the death of her mother (before the beginning of the novel.)
  • Radicz: A gypsy boy who is a friend of Lalla.
  • le Hartani: Shepherd boy who is a friend of Lalla.
