With a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, I anticipated an outstanding story with this book. I've walked the Bridge of Sighs in Venice, so that added to my eagerness to read this novel. But as I expectantly & optimistically (just call me "Lou-Lou"--the main character) read this 527-page work, I found that it just went on and on and on with nothing really happening right up to the end. While Russo is a skillful writer and weaves an intricate story with his characters inner and outer-worlds, all I could think was that I wanted it to be over. I had "That Old Cape Magic" on my to-read list, but I don't think I can bear reading another one like this.

I liked it but not as much as Empire Falls. Have read several Richard Russo including Straight Man. Bought Larry That Old Cape Magic

I have heard mixed reviews on this book. I have tried twice now to read it and just can't get past the first few chapters. It just starts out to slow for me. I do own it, so I am sure I will try again someday but for now it is going to sit and collect dust.

A very good book but the writing seems to go in circles at times. Several times I shouted out loud 'Get on with it, already!' Glad I stuck it out to the end.

Loved Empire Falls. Expected to love Bridge of Sighs but got really bogged down. Russo seems not to trust his readers: he explains and explains and explains via inner monologues. He goes down informational paths that distract and impede the forward progression. His characters are interesting but the novel's structure seems flawed. Bobby's life gets short-shrift in this tale. Kayla is a great character but her role's intention seems lame. I sense a real flailing about in this work.

Get book, very dense. Not recommended for those with ADD. Exceptional book with well developed characters. About a small town family, that is changed by buying a run down grocery store. Very well written.
